Quick power cord question...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a quick question about power cords. I sent my MB210 combo in to have it checked out and they forgot to send my power cord back with it. Will any power cord work or do I need a specific type...wire size, voltage rating, etc? I have a cord that says 18 awg but I don't know the voltage rating. I'm hoping they send me back my original cord but I need something to hold me over. Thanks.
The only numbers I can find on this cord are: 2-25411 LL16892 18/3 SJT. I doubt if the number helps but I thought I'd throw it in. Thanks again.

if it is a standard cable, sutch as a computer uses, then you can use whatever you have as far as i know.

As long as the end that plugs into the amp fits, you're good.

I misread your post title as power CHORDS at first! Sounds like the CORD you have will work fine.

That's all you need to know. It's good for an 8 ampere maximum load. Check the back of your amp to see how much current it draws.

Not necessarily - for example, I have a couple of Crown power amps that use IEC cables, but require a heavier guage than the typical 18/3 IEC cable... IIRC, those Crown amps came with 14/3 IEC cables...

Dunno how things work in the US, but here, cords tend to be 5amp or 13amp, marked and fused to match, the fuse is there to prevent the cable burning up. Best go with a 13 amp one for amps, bit power amps and valve amps can blow a 5amp one. Don't switch a 13amp fuse into a 5amp loaded plug, the cable is probably lighter and will get warm.

Cords in the US are not fused. The fuse is on the amp.

The Kingdom days are long gone .

The "kettle leads" with fuses are only found on the islands and on some of the more unfortunate former colonies AFAIK. When I saw those for the first time, I thought it was a relic from the days of past, but one of my UK friends shook his head and told me they still use 'em.

As for the "one IEC fits all" statement, it's can be true below ~500W draw, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Regards
Sam

I have an Ibanez 65 watt Soundwave bass amp. I guess I can just use that cord til I get the other one.

Right, but he's got an MB210 combo amp- not a big power hungry monster like those Crowns.

Under-Rated Power Cable

Most of you all probably know this, but I thought I'd go through it for our our friend here...

The 18/3 cable means that the conductors in the cable are 18AWG (the size of the separate conductors) and that there are 3 of them... AWG sizes work backwards from what you'd think... The smaller the AWG number the larger the conductor. So 14AWG would have larger conductors than 18AWG...

What's going to happen if your power cable isn't large enough?? It's going to heat up... When it heats up, it's going to create more resistance to the current flowing through it. So when you hit that HUGE last note of the song, your amp is going to try to suck all the current it has to (or can) through that heated up power cord and "may" peter out...

That said, it's going to depend on a LOT of electrical conditions and you're probably not going to be playing loud enough (driving that 500 Watt amp to it's limits) to make an 18AWG power cord heat up "too bad"...

But hey, after a loud rehearsal or gig, feel the cord. If it's hot, get one of the 14AWG ones...

Well, to be on the safe side, you should probably get a 14AWG one anyway... or at least 16...

My two cents...

All the best!
