R&B Players, what are you using?

Sign in to disble this ad
What amps are you R&B players using? I mean those of you whose primary genre to play is R&B. I always see what the Rockers are using, I want to know what other people that play what I play use.

Well, I'm not strictly an "R&B" player, but that's generally how I describe myself when asked. I don't so much go for an "old school" R&B sound as I do a modernish neo-soul sound (fat and punchy but with full-range definition). I usually play an MTD 535 but will also bring out the Fender Jazz for some stuff and sometimes a Sadowsky (though I find my main MTD to be remarkably versatile and capable of pulling off a very woody-n-thumpy tone as well as a very "modern" hi-fi tone). My amps are Ampeg SVT Pros (III and IV) and I recently replaced my Eden cabinets with Bergantino neos (a 410 and a 210).

Sort of similar to above reply for me too.

I used to use a Fender Reggie Hamilton sig Jazz STD (P/J pups, Active passive & 3 band EQ) with flats. & I still do use that for the old school stuff & some modern stuff where flats sound best for the song.
But since grabbing my Alleva-Copollo EUT5- that now my MAIN player bass!! A beauty!

Amp & cabs:- Usually My Mesa Walkabout is heaps-at 2 or even 4 ohms it gets LOUD
& into the Bergantino NV215 cab- it's tonal nirvana!!!
Or into Bergantino AE112, AE212 - so I can run the Mesa WA Scout(it's combo format-8 ohms) into the Berg AE112 & AE212- for a 4x12 stack!!! At 2 ohms & 500w THAT moves some serious air!

Sometimes my ol' '92 SVTII (non-pro) comes out (always with lovely results) & goes into similar cabs USUALLY the NV215 tho. I have got 2 other 1x15 cabs I can add- for a 4 x 15" rig!! Tho I've not done that.

I'm more old school RnB, think Stax, Atlantic, James Brown, etc. Occaisionally I get to play some Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, maybe some early Funk. I mostly use a passive Fender Jazz, with a 215 cab, eq set to flat, with a little bump in the low mids. I jump between a MarkBass F1, to a Ashly SC-40 pre/PLX 1202 power amp. I'll use a foot pedal compressor ( BBE opto stomp ) when I need to slap and pop, but otherwise, that's it. Soon, I'll be trying a 12/12/6/1 lightweight cab from LDS to give me more of a punch in the loud ass wedding/private party band I'm in.

Tecamp puma 1000 & tecamp 212, Eden wt330 & glockenklang 410. The first rig is more modern and the second rig is a lil more vintage, especially with the Eden head. Right now, playing an alleva coppolo RA5. Over the year, my ear is changing to vintage sound basses.

Lull J-style 5
Fender MIA Standard P-Bass all strung with nickel roundwounds.

Crest CA9, Demeter HBP-1 preamp.
For small to medium clubs I use 2 Aguilar GS112 cabs.
For bigger stuff I used my Bergantino HT210/HT115 cabs. I just bought 2 new Mesa PH212 cabs that I can't wait to gig with.

I play 60's/70's Motown/Stax R&B, 60's/70's Classic Rock, and the necessary Country numbers.

No scooped mids, no modern-type tone. The sound I've been able to dial in with my basses/ amp/cab setup works well for those 3 styles IMHO.

David Eden amps into David Eden 2x10 Cabs - ( Older 210XLT dual ported reflex cabs have more mid punch and depth and are really awesome for shaping your mids for different slap tones )
