Rack buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, question for you all.

I have my amp (and other assorted goodies) rackmounted in a Gator case, which sits atop 2 2x10 cabs. At high volumes (not SUPER high, but pretty high) the rack buzzes. From what I can tell, it's actually the latches that hold the front and back covers on that are the culprit.

I'm assuming that this is a common issue, I would think that many people have this problem. It's not a HUGE deal, but it does bother me.

Now, this is just a theory, but I don't think it's the cabs themselves vibrating. They are solidly built cabs, and I've put my hand on them while playing lower notes at high volume, and I can't feel a thing. (Not exactly a scientific test, but it's the best I can do). I think it may just be the air movement, kind of like how a loud rig will make the drummer's snare start buzzing. Again, I could be wrong, just a theory..

Any advice? I've tried moving the latches to different positions, but no luck. The buzz is still there

My gator doesn't make a sound on a svt 410hlf, the latches are tight and smooth. You could look into replacing them, or even just taping them down with some black duct tape before shows and practice.

Just take the head off your amp, you'll figure out what it is. Then we can help you fix it.

SKB racks have the latches on the lid, which seems like a superior execution.

I have a Gator rack, and can always get rid of the rattling by moving the latches a bit. Some duct tape would work.

I suggest you sell your current rack and purchase one with the latches on the lids instead of on the rack. Solves the problem once and for all without a band-aid solution.

Did you try taking your rack off of your rig? Sometimes under extreme volume, I can hear the innards of my power amp shaking. I too have the Gator rack case. If the vibration is just between the cab and the rack, try placing a piece of closed cell foam (wife's yoga mat) in between the cab and your rack and see if the problem disappears.

Yup - it's pretty dumb to mount the latches on the case instead of the lids...

That's why I'll never buy a Gator rack. Don't put loose vibrateable things on top of speaker cabs. Would it really be that hard to put the latches on the lid instead of the rack?

The other part of that is, Gator racks are a bit more flimsy than SKB racks, and not all that much cheaper cost-wise... Personally, I buy used SKB racks, and have had great luck with them - SKB has replaced hardware a couple of times for me under warranty, with zero hassle or cost - even though I bought their stuff used...
