Question Rackable amps???

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always used combo amps but i want to move on and get an amp head but it seems quite a confusing world. I've seen that some amps can be put into racks, but do i need to put it into a rack or can i just put it on top of the cab without a rack?

I'm confuddled

Either way works. Often, a rackable amp won't have much in the way of protection from bumps. And it may have sharp metal edges.

People rack the amp if they've got other rack-mountable equipment.

You just have to make sure nothing covers the fan.

If your amp is rackable you should fit it into a case to protect it. The front panel controls, especially graphic EQs, are easy to knock off during transport and a bear to replace.

I built headcases for my rackmount amps, which is essentially a rack just big enough to wrap around the head, there's no room for other equipment. They having nothing to do with the performance or cooling of the amp. Just for protection during transport. I put a strap handle on one side and you can pick it up and carry it like a briefcase.

Many rackmountable amps will come in a headcase or at least have one available. Or you could buy a small rack to put the head in and maybe a space or two open for future purchases, like a tuner, effects unit or whatever.

Yeah, you don't have to put them in a rack, but it's good policy to do it. It protects them from minor bumps and scrapes. Looks bitchen, too.

I have a Rack-able Hartke LH500 head and just got a small Rack case just to protect it. It's probably a good idea.

I use G-K amps in a Gator shallow rack. Perfect fit!
