Iíll need to purchase some new gear to go back out in the clubs; specifically a new amp. I know that I will be purchasing a separate head and cabinets, and right now Iím looking at 1-15 cabs. What really surprises me is the large price spread on something as straightforward as a 1-15 bass cab. Thereís the cabinet, the 15Ē driver and some hardware. (not interested in any HF components, no tweeters, crossovers, etc.)
Now the 15Ē driver can range from some no-name junk to a top quality high power handling speaker from any of a handful of high end manufacturers. Throwing out the really cheap stuff, the drivers are going to be the largest single cost item; but the range in cost of good drivers canít be that wide. For the cabinet, there are only so many tested designs that are proven to work well with a 15Ē speaker in a compact enclosure for bass reproduction. The misc hardware, tolex, grillcloth, etc canít be a significant part of the cost; so weíre down to the 15Ē driver, the cabinet and labor.
Iím not complaining that prices are too high, Iím just surprised that good quality cabinets with high end 15Ē speakers have such a wide range of Ďstreetí prices: from barely $300 to around $900. (price for new cabinets from one of the major music retailers) Iím not mentioning specific names/brands as I donít want to get into a critique of specific models, Iím just trying to understand how such seemingly similar cabinets can have such a large range of prices; is there an obvious explanation? One of the models Iím considering is at the low end of that range, but now Iím wondering what Iím giving up; those cabinets that cost almost 3 times as much have to be offering so much more performanceÖÖÖ.donít they? or not so muchÖÖ.
what do the good $750 to $900 (street price) 1-15" cabs offer that the best quality $300 to $400 cabs don't?
