that's been my experience.

You may want to run some displacement calcs on your cab configurations using "average" drivers and see how the rankings shake out.

The fF's are so earthshaking because of the incredible displacement of those drivers. The 1515s have more displacement than some car engines!

Edit: just using some typical figures, a 10" driver with 4 mm xmax is 140 cc, a 12" with 5 mm Xmax is 270 cc, and a 15" with 5 mm is 411 cc (taken from Eminence driver spec sheets, S2010, S2012, and CB158 respectively).

For perspective, the KL 3012LF is 496 cc and the 3015LF is 846 cc.

All things being equal, here's a definitive list:

8x10 = 8 motors, 250" sq cone area
6x10 = 6 motors, 187" sq cone
4x10 = 4 motors, 125" sq cone
3x10 = 3 motors, 94" sq cone
2x15 = 2 motors, 94" sq cone
2x12 = 2 motors, 75" sq cone
2x10 = 2 motors, 63" sq cone
1x15 = 1 motor, 47" sq cone
1x12 = 1 motor, 37" sq cone
1x10 = 1 motor, 31" sq cone

But things aren't equal, in particular the 2x12, 3x10, and 2x15 are close enough that BL and Xmax can easily overcome the difference. 15's handle more power but then there's issues like BL vs cone area, etc

That's pretty helpful. Again, knowing that things aren't equal at all and that IRL you'd have to take into consideration all sorts of things like cab design, driver quality, wizardry and probably six other things... any or all of which could make a 1x10 louder than a 1x12 and so on.

But still, it's good to get the lie of the land, theoretical thought it may be.

The truth is, I was thinking about mismatching my 212 with another cab and I want to get one that's about as close to it in terms of actual volume and power handling. Looks like a single 15 might not be the best choice and that I should probably go for a 210.

I'd get a 212, but I'm trying to seriously cheap out. I'm not dropping $500 on another GK Neo 212 right at the moment. But there are tons of used 210s out there: GKs, SWRs, Peaveys, you name it. Some are as cheap as $150.

I have (2) neo 15's....they sound different than the 12's to my ears, more high mid. Hold out for another 2x12..then ya got yourself a modular 4x12 witch just so happens to 'NOT' be on your list!

A pair of Neo 212s has always been my ultimate goal. And last year when I was flush with photography money I dropped $2500 on bass gear, starting from scratch, buying stuff, deciding I didn't like it, getting other stuff... and right around the time when I was just about done.... I'm not so flush anymore. So I have a $600 bass, probably $800 on the pedal board, a $500 head...one $600 Neo cab...

Then I ran out of money, punted and got a used GK 410MBX. Nice cab, but too heavy for me and probably overkill. So I'm getting rid of it. Just wondering what I might get to replace it cheap until such time as I can afford another Neo 212 (or to dump everything and go fEARful!)

why not just get a Neo 112 after you sell the 410? Then another 112 later?

Hm. Well I could sell the 410 and the Neo 212...and get what? A pair of Neo 15s? A pair of Neo 12s? I wonder if I'd even have enough to do that...

yes, don't they use (the II series) the same drivers for the NEO series but a cheaper tweeter? If so that'd make sense, they're around 400 a pop.

I am sure around Christmas time GK will offer discounts.....I got my 15's for 399 each no tax or shipping a few months ago. Sounds like you need some more photography flush.

Amazon tax was not an issue when I got my cabs....The laws have changed to date in Cali. Now we pay sales tax. Bummer. Sorry just an after thought.

I sold all my photo gear. I don't have time for two hobbies. Unfortunately I gave up the lucrative one and took up the expensive one. Clever of me, eh?

what about 1x18 or 2x18 or 1x21?

What about using a calculator? Hint: pi = 3.1415927 roughly

Cone diameter is well short of nominal. Use the published cone area x xmax if there isn't a Vd.

Uhhhh

just get a 2x15 and be done with it.

or get a pair of matching 2x12's
I see no point in mismatching cabinets

then again their is the old 8x10....but 2 4x12's will blow it away

so get 2 4x12's just for the heck of it, people are clue less a 100watt quad of 6l6 or a 150 quad of 6550 will light it up with delight when you have that much speaker sensitivity

Displacement does not equal volume. While they are related, one is physical and the other is psychological.
