Raw speaker wattage embelishments

Sign in to disble this ad
Lately I have been seeing some ridiculous claims about how many watts a raw speaker can handle. I remember a guy who recones speakers once telling me that an individual raw speaker can only handle about 300 watts RMS. That is if it has a 3 inch voice coil.

The "wattage" rating of a speaker is how much heat the voice coil can take before it melts. There's much more to it than that and the cabinet can't really handle that but that's why you see 1000 watt 410 bass cabs.

There is no one correct amount of wattage for all cones based on coil diameter. So your guy is about as trustworthy as the speaker sellers.

Then I would not trust him to recone my speakers because he has no clue.
