So I usta play through a G-K 1001 through a Old School Mesa 2x15 roadready. I loved the sound, and it worked for the style of music I play.

About 2 gigs ago my head died on me (fan didn't come on, and fried the head) so I decided to go the tube route. I picked up a Fender Bassman 300 (from a fellow TBer here) and I'm awaiting on its arrival.

Now somewhere on here I read its best that if you use a clean head, you want colored cabs, and visa versa. So since I'm going to be coloring my sound with all this upcoming tubey goodness I'm thinking about getting some other cabs.

Now my dream cabs would be to run an 8x10 and a 4x12 simultaneously. Troy from Mastodon does this and uses Mesa cabs. But are the Mesa cabs clean enough? Or what about the G-K 8x10 or 4x12? How do those sound?

Any suggestions?

Best thing about the Fender 300 is its power and "no fan" convection cooling. Somebody suggested to use a clip on fan if playing in the sun, but I never had to . I use either a 215Fender pro cab or my 810E. It will easily take 2 cabs 4 Ohms , etc..................Have fun..................

Colored or clean cabs are not something you should worry about. Find a store or friends who have the cabinets you want and try them out with your Fender 300 head. Then play whatever you like. If you going through a PA system at shows, an 810 and 412 run together at shows is a one way ticket to angering the sound man.

Keep on Rockin'.

this colored/clean stuff is bullcrap, sorry. most of the people who say that wouldn't recognize flat response if it hit them on the head.

I have a Sunn 300T, which is exactly the same as the Fender 300 Pro, and my opinion is that as long as you have decent cabs (and you do), this head will not let anything stand in its way with regards to ass-kicking. Play with the graphic EQ and you will end up with the sound you want, regardless of cabinet.

Well, from what I was told, the different speaker configuration gives you a different tonal character. 2x15 is more of an old school sound where as the 8x10 will give you more punch and they throw farther.

Down here in Miami, we dont have stores that carry more than an ampeg 8x10 (for larger cabs anyway) so its really hard for me to try out different brands of cabs.

This is why I refer to the wisdom found on these pages to inquire about these types of things.

I'm pretty sure the Mesa will get me the type of sound that I want, but I was thinking about the G-K as well. Are the G-K's any good? Do they hold up to heavy giging standards? Or just wait and buy the Mesa when I get alittle more money?

BTW, In the venues that I play currently I'm not bringing a 8x10 AND a 2x12 anytime soon... my band aint that big yet =)

Plug the Fender amp into the Mesa 215 and enjoy what comes out. I think the pairing will sound 8 shades of awesome. Listen for yourself, I think you'll agree.
