Recomend me some new tubes - SVT 2 Pro

Sign in to disble this ad
So I finally made the jump from my crappy B2R to an SVT 2 Pro. I have a lot of gear knowledge but not a lot of experience. My only tube amp experience has been working on my guitarists tube amp. I do love the 2 pro, has a great warm and full tone. I can't seem to get the kind of natural overdrive out of it that I'm craving though. The tone will stay pretty clean with the drive all the way up.

I was in an experimental metal band and now I'm moving towards a post-metal / sludge / stoner band. I want to have a really dirty tube tone. If anyone knows Nate Newton of Converge, that's the kind of overdriven tube sound I'm looking for. I just don't happen to have the experience with different tubes to know what to get.

specifically, is this achieved through the pre, driver or power tubes? What would you recommend?

What cab are you using? IMO, you should experiemt with some Pre-Amp tubes, as well as Phase Inverter. Power tubes too, but you'll be spending big bucks to try things out there.

You won't get a huge difference in changing your tubes. To be honest you'd probably be as well getting an overdrive pedal or something.

You'll also get more dive out that amp if you crank it, as opposed to just the drive dial, crank the gain and volume.

And actually, playing with phasing and BIAS might get you what you need. I'd say get the AMP biases properly, then throw the phase off to get some offset in the wave form and you might find exactly what you are looking for.
