Forgive me if I'm putting this in the wrong place.
I just got my first bass, a gently-used Schecter Stiletto Studio 5 with passive EMG HZ pickups and active 3-band EQ. Today, I got a Gallien-Krueger 400RB 200 watt 4 ohms from the 80's (just like Bon Jovi).
The amp is a little rough around the edges, but it works, and was made in America, which I dig.
I've been told to get a cab with a 15" speaker. I can't exceed a total load of 4 ohms. The fellow who sold me the amp recommends Hartke and Peavy at 250watts.
If anyone has experience with this particular amp and can recommend something more specific that seems to work well with it, I'd be eternally grateful. I want to buy used. I'll then proceed to scour eBay and used GC gear for your recommendation.
Thanks so much!!!

It would sound nice through one of the Ampeg 15s as well, but they're 8 ohms, so you'd get only 150 watts instead of 240.

| | | - 4 ohm GK 115MBE 1x15 Ultra Light Bass (200w)
- 4 ohm Marshall MBC410 4x10" Bass Reflex (600w)
- 4 ohm Marshall MBC115 1x15" Bass Reflex (300w)
- 4 ohm SWR Goliath Junior 2x10 (400w)
- 4 ohm SWR Triad 1x15/1x10/tweeter (400w)
- 4 ohm SWR WorkingPro 4x10 (400w)
Surely, there must be more 4 ohm cabs for people who don't want a full stack?
It seems the only choice I have is that GK 115MBE. Everything else has too many watts for my little 200 watt amp. I don't want to kill the poor thing.
I could also buy two 8 ohm Gallien Krueger 115MBX (200w) cabs, and be fine as long as they are both connected?
The 4 ohm Aguilar GS 410 Bass Cabinet (not in my price range; maybe one day)

Many 1x15 cabs are 8 ohms since many people will use two of them. (for a 4 ohm load).
In my personal experience, I find that a 4x10 has more definition, quicker response, and more articulation.. and a 1x15 cab sounds more wooly. More 60's.
(I personally prefer 15"s.)
If you want a single 4x10, there are millions of them out there (SWR, GK, Hartke, Ampeg)
Avatar Speakers will make you a great sounding 4x10. They are a good value.
If you want a single 15" at 4 Ohms, you might need to search a little more, or build a box around one of the Eminence 4 ohm drivers.
I personally wouldn't go anywhere near GC or eBay. I'd use your local craigslist, and bring your head so you can try out the cab.
(Personally, I think with that head, you'll need at LEAST two 15"s or one 15" and two 10"s. (Or one 4x10") if your drummer actually knows how to hit the drums.) |

| | | | That is VERY helpful.
Can you recommend a specific model 4x10 at 4 ohms? And aren't they all going to be high wattage cabinets? This head is only 200 watts.... |

Other new ones...
Ampeg 410HLF
SWR Goliath 4 Ohm
GK410 RBH (if you specify 4 Ohms when you order)
Other ones, I don't know off the top of my head. It's probably best to hammer craigslist in your area (and surrounding towns) til' something specific pops up, then see if it's a 4 Ohm cab.
(Vintage Sunn 2x15s pop up pretty often, sometimes Kustom 2x15s... Boogie cabs...)
If you really only want one cab, I'd also look at 6x10s and 2x15s. Since that head is only 200 Watts, you're going to want as much speaker surface-area moving as possible.
(There are modern 2x12 cabs too... 4x12 cabs... Aguilar stuff...)
I wouldn't worry about them being high wattage cabs. 1) Trust your ears. 2) You'll be getting a louder amp soon enough. |

A 200 watt head will push a 500 watt cab with ease. Just find something you like, that you can afford, and rock it out.

4 Ohms is the minimum load that amp will push. You could push an 8 Ohm cab, you just won't get as much efficiency out of the head (perceived volume). (I'm almost 100% certain the 400RB will push an 8 Ohm cab. It's been years since I had one.)
Where are you geographically? I could poke around the craigslist and see if there are any hidden gems.
And there's always the DIY route. If you have access to a table saw, or if you have a skillsaw and are VERY patient and can set up some jigs w/ clamps, etc... you could always build an EV-TL606 or one of the Fearful designs:

But seriously... you don't need to get some gold-plated cab for that head. Something in the $250-$350 range on Craigslist will be plenty of cab for that head. There's probably a bunch of stuff here on the TB classifieds that would fit the bill too... but again... shipping cabs is usually a pain. Local is better... try b4 you buy, etc... |

| | | | Thanks a lot, guys--you've been very kind and patient, and I do appreciate that.
Funny thing about shipping: When you drive a Dodge V8 truck, shipping can quickly become an attractive alternative. I'm in east central Indiana; driving to Indianapolis (as in Guitar Center, Sam Ash) costs me $60 in gas or more.
I'm hoping to see a SWR Basic Black combo here shortly, and a cab for the GK head will be less of a priority. |

Congrats on the new set up!
I use a 400rb as a back up head, and i use it through 8ohm cabs, on occation, with no problems what so ever.
I use it through an old Peavey 1x15 that HAD a 4ohm Black Widow, but i blew it and replaced it with an 8ohm Emminence.
Or i use an 8ohm Acoustic b410.
Did a weekend tour over Thanksgiving and our vehicle was lacking space, so i had my 4x10 with the 400rb... sounded AWESOME all three nights!!
My 400rb is also an older 80's model, with the attached power cord. I love that lil' bugger!
Good luck with the search... +1 to hitting up craigs list and rocking whatever you can afford!!

| | | While I'm waiting for the magic cab to fall into my lap, I picked up a SWR Basic Black from The Evil Empire for $200.
It's in great shape for its age. The volume makes me better appreciate the concept of a practice amp. I wish I had something smaller that I could use while other people are in the house, as the BB likes to be turned up loud.
At least I don't have to worry about blowing the speaker in one of my guitar amps now. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
