I've been playing for a few years now and im gonna start gigging soon so I need something bigger then my combo amp. I'm completly ignorant when it comes to amps so i was wondering if the knowledgeable people here at talkbass could pick something out for me. I play mostly hardrock and metal and i play a fender p-bass for the most part.

What are you playing now? We need to get some idea of what tone you're after.

i'd get a 410 and at least a 300w amp. and i'd go used because your quality dollar goes farther. brands are immaterial. just go play a few and when you find you like, buy it.

a marshall mb60 combo amp that i got for free. I just like a deep dark tone i use no effects and most of the time i use finger picks. so just like a simple sound i guess.

+1 on the acoustic for a first half stack. I'm gigging with the 200 watt head through the 410 but get the 600 if you can afford it. ($800)

Disclaimer: I love mine, but really, it's all about what JimmyM said, do your own thing.

You might want to look at a used GK MBX or RBX 410. You could pair this with a GK 800rb, which is the best used deal out-there, IMHO. I use one as a backup and love it. GK growl works great for the type of music your playing, IMO. The nice thing about GK is that it is readily available on the used market, it's affordable and relatively bulletproof.
