Recommendation on external power amps

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

My GK 1200SEB is an awesome sounding amp and does a great job of driving my 410/115 stack but it's also quite old and not sure if I could get timely service should it fail. The GK1200 is a stereo amp and has Left and Right Balanced outputs (with effects) in addition to the Direct Out (clean signal). I am seriously considering adding a power amp to drive the cabinets and take the load off my GK, but still use it to process my signal since it has chorus, compressor, limiter built in. Also, should my GK fail during a gig, I can simply run the output of the wireless to a separate power amp to bypass the GK and continue. (I like having back up plans).

What amps do most people use? I know QSCs are quite popular but really do not want to add another 30lbs. I have considered Crowns and American Audio. I'm also considering options for the future but more on that later.

I have a Carvin dcm 1000L that's been great to use for all kinds of purposes. I think the specs are 1000 watts into 4 ohms bridged or 325 per side, 10 lbs and a sturdy feel. $320 new.

I suspect that the power rating is conservative since I often run just one channel and feel like there's still plenty on tap.

Thanks. I will add that to my "list".

Peavey IPR - lots of power, light, and a good price.

I certainly like mine.

I've been using a Peavey IPR-3000 for a power amp for the past 6 months or so. It seems like a real nice little power amp, sounds great to my ears and so far its been loud enough for most gigs.
