Recommendation for rack mount case

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
Looking for a rack mount case that sits nicely on top of a cabinet (i.e. has feet, looks decent, etc). I need something with at least 4 slots.

Thanks

By "4 slots" are you referring the "U count?" Racks have threaded rails to mount the equipment. "1U" is 3 holes in height. I like the traditional wooden rack cases that Roadrunner makes. Guitarcenter sells them as does Musiciansfriend.

Also, Audiopile.net sells EWI cases (I own two) and they are great cases at a great price. Here's a link to the 4U shallow-depth case.

Before you buy, know how much depth you need. Take into account any cables that will stick out of the back of the racked equipment.

I like SKB ATA rackcases - although some people don't think they're heavy duty enough, I've been using them for years without any problems... All SKB products are lifetime guaranteed, and they've replaced any hardware that's failed without any hassle or expense to me... I've always bought mine used, and can usually find an SKB 4U ATA rackcase for under $100 - here's a pic of my main gigging rack:

A couple of nice things about a setup like this - if it has to ride in the back of a truck in rainy weather, these cases have seals built into the lids, and they hold out water really well...

Also, the total weight of my loaded rack: case, amp, tuner, wireless receiver, surge strip, cables, etc... is still under 50lbs... I've had this one over 6 years, and probably done well over 400 gigs with it, and it's still holding up quite well...

IMO, SKB is good, Gator is junk (talking about lightweight plastic racks.) I own a 6U Gator lightweight plastic rack and it's really flimsy. Latches are weak and rattle a lot and don't seal well. Case deforms if left in a hot car just for a little while, etc. Just MHO from my experience. If Gator cases work for you, then I am happy for you. I won't buy another one though.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely looking for something that sits on top of a cab, because one of my setups is going to be power amp/preamp combo. Thanks

Agreed 100% - I had one Gator rack, and got rid of it because it wasn't as sturdy as the SKB, and the latches are mounted on the case instead of the lids, where they belong - rattle city!!!
