Recommendations: $1000 to spend on head/cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I have a new gig, and I really have no clue where to begin looking for amps.

I'm going to be playing jazz pickups (Warwick) in a female-led rock/pop band. So I don't need screeching highs or heavy distortion. Just the best for my money.

The type of music can be heard here: Amanda Ihle Official Website

Thanks in advance for any advice!

the only answers you are gonna get is what everybodies favorite brand is, I would go try some amps/cabs and decide yourself, try buying used as well...... My answer would be a Gallien Krueger 700RB II head paired with a GK 410RBH cab..... But I am biased on GK gear because thats what I play.... see how that works?

+1

Now my turn to tell you my brand of choice, Ampeg. I just received my Portaflex PF500 amp and 2 PF115 cabinets. I spent about $1100 for the whole setup and couldn't be more pleased...

Ampeg: Portaflex Series

@traben - I was just trying to get some varied viewpoints and some good ideas for new amps to look for, because I don't have a ton of choices locally. All I asked for was what you would get on the same budget. If you aren't going to answer that, please don't bother posting.

Sometimes you can hit a homerun even though you can't try out a rig first.

The Epifani UL410 always gets great reviews here and can be had in the $500-$600 range used. Look into the Genz Benz NEOx 212T also, a fine 2x12 cab and around $450-$550 used.

As for heads there is MarkBass LittleMark II or III, Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0, 9.0 or Streamliner 6.0. An Eden WT-550 will kill. Prices will go from $400 to $600 used. Some of these combinations of cabs/head will be a little over your $1,000 budget. All these options are also lightweight and IMO high quality.

Professional Music Center has a Hartke 3500 head in a rack for $349 and a Hartke VX115 1-15 w/horn for $159. A good sounding combination. They also have an Ampeg 810 for $549 if you're just dying for a 'fridge'.

I'd probably do a Peavey Mark IV & an Ampeg 810, save up for a bit, and get a Peavey VB later. All used, btw.

What I bought for similiar money was a used GK700RBII and a Hartke HyDrive 4x10. Very happy with this setup and the Hartke not only sounds great it's pretty light for a 4x10.
