Recommendations for small practice amp.

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to pick up a small bedroom size practice amp. I usually practice in my home office along with my computer or my Bass Trainer. I sometimes find it easier to pick out songs when I am jamming along with them NOT using headphones and the trainer. Don't really know why that is .....but my main rig stays at our practice facility and I want to pick up something for this. Any recommendations?

I don't recommend anything too tiny. To my ears, the tone still sucks. On the low end of the budget, I liked the Peavey Max112. On the mid side, the Roland Cube100 offers a lot of fun features to keep your playing time stimulating, so I recommend that much more. If your budget allows, the Phil Jones stuff is pretty nice; crystal clear sound to help fine tune your technique -important for practice.

I think an Acoustic B20 would be perfect. You can find them all day long on craigslist for under $100, they really sound fantastic, and MUCH louder than you'd imagine 20 watts to sound like, and it has jacks for a line in (CD, MP3 player, etc) and for headphones, so you can do some of the things you currently use the trainer for also.

PS - the above link might be helpful, but the limitation of that thread being about a dude in Singapore would make your choices much easier...I think...

Thanks for the input and the link. I had a little Microbass years ago that sounded kinda crappy so I dig what you are saying about being too tiny. My main rig is a DB750 GS410 and being a tone freak doesn't make it any easier I was thinking about checking out the Orange line and I'll keep my eyes out for the small Acoustic mentioned as well.

+1 on Peavey. They make great little combos.

I don't know how much power you're looking or your budget, but you can pick up these little Hartke combo's on eBay brand new and cheap. I think the link will work, but it's a page that has a bunch of B150, B200, B300's on it. Starting at $99 brand new w/free shipping often. (15w,20w, & 30w.) If you need a little more, step up to the "A-series", but it doesn't sound like you need a whole lot of volume.

Calling all Behringer haters:

Now that I got this out of the way I can offer my suggestion:

Behringer BXL450A.

I have owned one for 3-4 years now and gets a lot of use at home. It sounds better than anything I've tried in that size and range. It really sounds like a bass, just not as loud as my standard rig, although it can rattle windows if you want to.
Easy to carry, nice tilt-back option, aux input, two channel...
I can plug in a guitar via POD or similar into the aux input and a bass into the normal input, and use one amp for both. Or a drum machine. Very handy.

Really, try one out if you have the chance.
