recone SWR Goliath II

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking at a Goliath II with 3 blown drivers that I can pick up for $50. I'm no big fan of tweeters, so my thought was to rip out the horn and the crossover, patch over the hole where the horn used to be, recone the blown drivers and wire up the four 10s in parallel to the jack. However, I'd REALLY prefer to have a 4 ohm cab.

I have a question for the SWR fans and tech heads out there: can the PAS drivers in an SWR Goliath II 410 cab be reconed to 16 ohms each instead of 32?

Why not just turn the horn off.?
There is no change in impedance with or with out the horn and you'll retain it's selling/trade value, as well.

and, I'm guessing you want it 4 ohms so you can "get all the power" from your head. But, fact is, it won't make a very big difference either way, and keeping it 8 ohms allows for future expansion.

There's a bit of a tonal difference when I run an 8 ohm cab the 4 ohm tap of my SVT. There's no 8 ohm tap on my SVT.

I doubt I will ever need future expansion. I already own a 4 ohm 810. I'm looking for a 4 ohm 410. I found this beat SWR cab and I'm wondering if I could give it a second life as a 4 ohm cab.

Good advice. Thanks for that. However, these cabs sound different if you disconnect the crossover and run full-range signal to the 10s. I like the way that sounds. That part of the mod has nothing to do with my desire to change the overall impedance of the cab. Two different issues.

I'm not concerned about resale value, but I appreciate the suggestion.

I'm going to have to recone 3 drivers anyway, so the thought I had was that I would do them all to 16 ohms if it's possible. The abiding question is: does anyone know if I can get a 16 ohm recone kit for the PAS drivers in this cab?

My gut instinct is no. I looked into recones on mine and it was very hard to find legit recone kits for them. I don't recall 16 ohms being an option at the time. If anyone would be able to answer your question it would be Orange County Speaker Repair. Give them a call.

Up here in Ontario there is a guy who specializes in fabricating from scratch custom copy of recones and voicecoils for vintage unobtanium speakers. For our pro audio needs, I wouldn't recommend going down this path. My Golliath Jr. II was done this way and it wasn't the same.
