hi Guys
looks like I need to recone one of my beloved Mesa Roadready ev 15" speakers, its in a 2x15 cab rated at 800 watts
its starting to make clicking noises on lower register fat notes / chords.
I love this speaker and I am really concerned about someone opening it up and attempting to remake it sound as good as it was.
does it really work... what do I need to watch out for?
I am in Germany, do I need to order special parts form the US?
or is it all about the chasis?
thanks for any advice
J

| It could be fine.
You sure it's just not something loose?
Maybe you just need to add a rumble filter, (high pass) so you don't exceed xmax.

I would inspect the driver's cone and surround from the front visually and then (carefully) work your way around the surround, poke up on the surround with your finger, and try and hear or feel if the surround is lifting off the frame.
If its not that, try and see how far its moving when the clicking takes place - you could be over-driving the driver as seamonkey said.
Any more information would help decide whether the driver needs surgery. |

And of course when it's totally locked up.

I used screws from theback wall into the brace to hold it in place, no more problems.

+1 for checking the "external" causes first, including separated surround, spider and the leads from the basket to the cone. Also the dust-cap will make srange sounds if it's separated. On air cooled cores a separated dust-cap can rattle and whistle quite audibly.
Was the EV15L used only on the Diezels, or is it in the road readies also?
I haven't checked lately, but Thomann used to sell reconed EV15's as well as reconing kits.
There's two "problems" though, which both have prevented me from buying the kit and reconing my two EV's.
The first is the price of the kit, 200€ IIRC (Edit:and incorrectly I remembered, 200 for a pair, 100€ each). For that price a superior modern driver can be bought.
The second is closely linked to the kit price, as there's no way of knowing whether the air gap is still clean, and that means a gamble.
Mesa may offer You a better solution.
Regards
Sam

J | I'm 100% with Paul on this, interview the reconers.
RISK? The cargo plane will roll over another unexploded US BOMB under the ramp there in Berlin... My Buddy's wife is from there; worked for Lufthansa. You guys finding that bomb was big news at their house...

Anyway, +1 to what these guys said. Make sure the speakers are mounted tight as well as all the other parts of the cabinet. Make sure wires aren't hitting the back of the cone. If a small part of the cone is starting to separate from the surround or the dustcap is coming loose, some glue and a steady hand can be a temporary fix.
If a re-cone is necessary, interview not only the reconer but more importantly others who have had work done there. Also make sure you're getting a real, EV approved re-cone kit, not some chinese knockoff.
Es ist nicht eine grosse probleme, erste haben sien hauswerke gemacht.
