recording with GK 1001RBII...

anyone here record using the DI on the GK 1001RBII head? and if so, did you use anything like a pedal or preamp to warm up the tone or add grit and growl to it, or just go straight in? will be using a DAW, maybe Logic...

any tone tips on recording with a GK 1001RBII would rock...

I own a GK2001RB never recorded using the DI on it.. I prefer some form of Tube DI for recording.. The Avalon U5 works for my purposes..

I did an EP with the 1001 DI and it turned out great, I just went DI out into ProTools, no pedals or anything. The only tone tip I would recommend is to use the "contour" knob sparingly, that mid scoop voicing can get a little tricky in a dense mix. This is an old band of mine (Courier), and my bass tracks were recorded with a US P Bass with D'Addario Chromes, through the 1001RBII DI (no cab). I believe the 1176 plug-in was used on the bass track as well. http://soundcloud.com/user152766/hold-up#play

I have used it for recording through the DI/miced and with the effects out, the DI and effects out put out a strong tone suitable for recording.

I would at least try it without a pedal first and then see how it goes, things sound different when you hear it in playback. I did use a compression pedal and a VT pedal some of the time when I was recording but I do like the 'naked' tone of the head too, by the time I tweaked it, it actually didn't sound much different from my old hybrid head with tubes.

Using the DI out on a GK1001RBII is probably one the bottom of the list for me, and I own one lol. If you gave me the option to mic one up through my 810 and crank it, then I would consider it.

It'll work in a pinch as a DI, but so would running through whatever tube preamp the studio has laying around.

We do board recordings of rehearsals at the church. I have run my MB500 post EQ line out into the Avalon U5 into the board. The MB500 has essentially the same preamp as the RB1001 with the 5 string engaged. The bass was a Sadowsky RV5 usually with nickel rounds. I ran the MB500 pretty close to flat, no countour, and about 50% boost. The MB500 helped everything sit well in the mix. Strong, punchy, and present without boom. It was a bit of an improvement over going straight into the Avalon U5. That's not just my opinion but the opinion of a couple sound guys as well.

We record live with a Presonus StudioLive 24 into a Mac and I was totally amazed at the killer tone that was coming through the first time I heard the playback. And the was all pre eq-etc out of the board and I was even running Pre out on the DI on the 1001RBII
