Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I just purchased an iPad 2 with GarageBand. I was wondering if I can use the line out with no speakers without doing damage to the head? Sorry for the lame question.
Tube heads must be connected to a load or you risk damaging the head. There are options out there, dummy loads I believe they're called that will stand in for a speaker if you need to be quiet.

On the Peavey VB-2, the preamp is active when the standby is on, you can use the DI out and the tone controls are active, the standby is just for the power tubes, this is the only amp that I know of, that has this feature
Yeah, you can do what jastacey said. The DI post EQ setting would be good for that.
You will probably get better sounding results if you use a mike in front of a smaller speaker cab like a 110, 112, or 210. That way you can turn the amp up a little more to capture more tubeyness at a lower volume for you AND the mike.

So if I leave it on standby I can track doing no damage?

This will give you a full stack mic'd cabinet sound, and this is only one option for iPad. Many modelers/simulators/emulator are jumping on the iPad platform.
