recovering my cab grill= pain in the @$$

Sign in to disble this ad
im about to rip my freaking face off. I've been working on this damn grill for about 9 hours all together so far.

fender bassman 4x10 with one of the metal grill faces. I went to joann fabrics and bought some off the wall fabric and started hand stitching it on the other night. About half way in I realized i i had the print sideways and had to un-stitch everything. so i get all the sides stitched and im like ...$#!^ yeah i did it.

Well a quick thing about me, i like to assume i know everything about everything and i know im right.

Well actually no, im not. I get it on there and this is my result.

At this point im happy as a school girl. It looks awesome. So i screw it back on and it just rattles like no other.

I am about to just throw the whole idea out the window.

Any tips?

IMO, if you sprayed the metal grill with contact cement and quickly laid the material in place stretched tighly, it wouldn't rattle.

Now that your material is on, you can stitch in some "garts" in key places to stop the fabric "rattle." Use an asterisk pattern (*). Probably won't be necessary to go all the way to the edges... Try going just half way from center point to the edges... Should be enough.

Looking good!

I've done similar experiments, but not hand stitching. I just wrapped around some dark blue material around the metal grill using double sided tape. The key is it wont work if the cab is front ported. *Maybe* if the material was super thin.

I work nights so I'm naturally nocturnal.

I don't have any advice on the rattle beyond what's already posted above. I do like the retro look and think it's bad ass.

...plus you got bitch'n drapes and a rad couch.

my girlfriends sister is a mortician, and she swears our house is set up like a viewing room and a funeral home.

as for the cement thing, the only thing stopping me from doing that is i might get bored with it and want to change it, for some other wild print.

That's what you get for buying a fabric that not only is ugly (IMO) but might not be acoustically transparent. If you don't want it to rattle, glue it down or make a wooden frame to attach the material to and store the metal grille for when resale time comes.
