Replace amp inputs with gold plated connectors?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got an idea to replace the connectors on the front and rear of my SVT-III Pro with gold plated connectors, not really because i think it will improve anything too much, just because it'd be cool. What do you guys think? I'm also thinking about soldering a lead onto the input jack on the front of the amp and making a second input on the rear, with everything rack mounted, its dumb having one cord wrap around to go to my amp

Having all the connections in the back may be handy. Gold plated connectors? I have a time-share you might be interested in.

You're doing it because you think it's cool. So that's up to you.
I wouldn't do it, nor would I worry about having the jack on the front.
Up to you though.
Have fun!

I guess it's good soldering practice, but it's very likely to make the value of your amp go down, for a novelty that won't last long.

Couldn't your energies be better spent fixing up a broken amp.

You're my hero, haha
Anybody know where i could find some connectors? I've searched all over and cant find gold plated connectors.

And my energies could be better spent, but i fix my friends stuff all the time for free. And this idea really started from my aggravation from setting up the amp in the rack when i got it because the jack on front is recessed enough that i cant use a right angle plug, but i cant leave a straight plug in and close the rack lid. Plus i think it looks tacky!

Take a look at George L's plugs. I'm sure they will fit and they are gold plated.

Gold is highly corrosion rsistant...but it's also very soft. Not very desirable in jacks or plugs that get used a lot.

I don't know that adding the rear jack would hurt the value any. Some people probably wouldn't even notice, others may think it's an OK idea or just not care. Find a place to drill it in that looks like it belongs there and print out a little stick on label that says "inst. input" or something so it doesn't look like a hack job add-on. It's not like that amp is a rare, vintage piece or something.

i would automatically want to pay $150 less for a used SVT that had gold replacement jacks on it. Why? Not that I didn't think it was a good job, but because I'd be wondering what else you futzed with that needed no futzing.

^This.

The alloy that's used for connector plating isn't necessarily as soft as one may think though.

For a reverb-tank connector and other internal connector(s), gold plated is preferred for a first class job, but for connectors that are used regularily, not so much. IMHO/IME anyway.

Regards
Sam
