Replaced Speaker: Lost all the LOW END

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Everyone,

I have the AVATAR 2x10 Neo.

One of the speakers blew a while back, so I ordered a replacement speaker from AVATAR.

Took out the blown one, connected the Speaker exactly the way it was connected.

Plugged in my iPod and ran some music through it for few days to 'break it in'..

I noticed the music sounded Damn Thin coming out of the iPod..SO I boosted the hell out of the EQ...to give it some bass...

Tried it with my bass, but man it sounded raw.

Tonight at the gig..I plugged in and wow...NOTHING in terms of low end.

I've been using this for a while and what I LOVE about the Cab IS the LOW end Wallop...

I plugged into my Sans AMP to juice the lows and wow..Got a bit distorted...

could this be out of Phase?

Any ideas.

Go easy, I'm no engineer!

Thanks

M

That's what it sounds like.

Try switching the positive & negative wires on the speaker you just installed, and try it again.

If the cab has a 1/4" jack plug a cord in and touch the minus of the battery to the sleeve and (intermittently) the plus to the tip on the cord plug and make sure both drivers move out when the battery is connected.

You can check raw speaker phasing with a 9 Volt battery. Attach insulated alligator clips to the end of a battery wiring harness. Clip one lead to a speaker terminal, and briefly touch the other lead to the other speaker terminal. The speaker cone will move forward or backward. All speakers' cones should move in the same direction for the same connection polarity.

Sometimes a driver will come through with its voice coil wired backwards to the binding posts on the basket. (I mean "backwards" relative to the manufacturer's convention.) Rare, but it happens. Might have been a recone and it was someone's first day of OJT and the expert slipped out back for five minutes for a quick smoke.

It's reverse polarity, which is 180 degrees out of phase.

Enough ... with ... the ... PHASE ... already

People in this forum sure do like to toss the terms phase and phasing around a lot. They must really like the sound of it. Real futuristic and techie and all.

You don't even need alligator clips - you can easily touch both terminals on a 9V battery with the tip and sleeve of a 1/4" plug on a guitar cord.

And it sure sound like it is out of phase (More phaser, Scotty!)
