replacement 10" for Mesa Powerhouse 1000

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all...
I'm new here so I posted an intro over at the New Members forum if your curious.
I bought a used Powerhouse 1000 a while back and replaced the 15 with an Eminince Kappalite... excellent idea!!!
The problem now is that one of the 10"s has blown itself out. I can't seem to figure out the exact speaker I need through the search function. Can you guys tell me if this is the one I need???
Electro-Voice EVM10DLX 10" Woofer

The other questions would be if there is a different speaker that would be ok to throw in there or if that would just completely ruin the sound of the cabinet... I really prefer the sound of the Eminence 15 over the EVM when pushed hard (please don't flame me on that).

Thanks in advance for any help and if there is already an answer for this, a link would be much appreciated.

I've gigged a PH1000 before and while they do have a certain ballsy, loud tone, from an engineering standpoint, the thing is a trainwreck. A 15 and 410's all sharing the same box with portholes cut in the baffle that have no length behind them. Best I could think of is to recone the original. Perhaps using a different 15 threw off the balance/interaction, I don't know. Compared to a carvin 15+410 stack it sounded more woody/boxy and much harder to control but it's built in sound was just plain loud, the metal bassist who owned it loved it.

Sorry, can't be of anymore help....I don't even know how it was wired.

If I recall, there were enough holes in the baffle you could see inside. I don't remember seeing any lining unless it was also black. I just remember it was loud as hell and had a certain sound you either liked or you didn't and no matter what knobs you turned, you still had some version of that sound.

With a kappalite, the 3015 is a MUCH better match for the power handling of 4 typical 10s than the EV is likely to be So don't blame you on that front.

Call up Mesa and get a direct replacement.

I would think so. The original may have had a 15B at best. OP, I would also stick with a recone or direct replacement, you don't want different spec speakers operating in the same space but this cab is already in direct violation of that.

Actually, ya know what?......scratch that. If you could somehow get a 3rd type of speaker going in there, you might have something along the lines of an Omega enclosure.

Yeah, I wouldn't replace the 10 with something without doing all of them. Call Mesa. Chances are good they'll cut you a reasonable deal.

The speaker is indeed an EVM 10, not sure about DLX...
I think these were made for Mesa to their specs (its 150 Watts, 8 ohm)

I blew up an EVM 10 from my 2x10 cab, these are 16 ohm and I was told can't be repaired (it would be 8 ohm after recone, there are no 16 ohm recone sets available)
I replaced it with an Eminence speaker and works fine for me untill I get my hands on a 16 ohm EVM.

I can't see the driver frame in those shots. Remove the driver from the cab for the picture. But from what I can see they may be EV Force, not EVM.

Drivers are definately EVM's.
But the pic is from my old cab, not from topicstarters cab

Mesa was using EVM's and Eden drivers for the 10 inch Diesel cabs in the 90's, Eden driver was EC1060F:

Thanx! But I don't have a problem, just showing what type of speakers Mesa used in the 90's

I would like to know what kind of speakers Mesa is using today though, there are no pics on their site: Mesa store, 10 inch powerhouse speaker 150 watt - 8 ohm

I’m a little slow this morning - but I just figured that out so I delete the post - Mesa/Boogie discontinued selling the Powerhouse 1000 last year in 2010.

Well, that's odd. If I remember, the one I used you could look in the front ports and see the stuff on the inside. You couldn't take the back off either, it was built like a roadcase/flitecase with metal corners.

There are more versions, mine is (was, it's not mine anymore) the Diesel series from the 90's. There's also the Roadready version (the one will33 is referring to)

Old (Diesel) :

Old Road ready:

New:

New Vintage PowerHouse:

New roadready:

(I think they stopped with the road ready series)

BTW: Today its Powerhouse 1200 because of the 600 Watt 15 inch speaker, the PH 1000 had a 400 Watt 15 inch speaker (1200/1000 Watt) Cab is the same.

OP, what year powerhouse 1000 are you talking about?

If you see the pics above, they used different speakers over the years.

In the 90's diesel style cabs, the Bassis 10's were made for Mesa by Eden, and many times EV's were optional.

The later powerhouse series cabs, I'm sure you'll be stuck having to get a replacement direct from Mesa. They're like $109 bucks.
