replacement speaker

I know nobody is a big fan of behringer but it was what I could afford at the time. I have a 300watt behringer amp and the speaker is only rated for 200 watts. My question is would it not start popping when the volume hits about seven if I changed out the speaker. If so, then speaker suggestions are welcome.

Much to learn. I assume we're talking about a combo amp? If so, is there a problem, or are you just concerned there may be?

Two things: First, you have to realize it's a Bheringer and you just can't expect it to get as loud and sound as good as a much more expensive, higher quality combo.

Second, look at how you have the tone set. Turning up the bass or mids will eat up a lot of headroom. Too much of either could also overdrive the the amp and sound nasty.
If the combo has an input gain and a master volume, don't put the input gain up so high that it overdrives the input. Use more of the master. On that amp I'd probably put the master volume most of the way up to keep it as clean as possible.

As far as the speaker.... The speaker in the combo will probably be just fine. Take the money and save up for a better combo or separate amp and speaker box. jmho

Sorry, but that was not at all clear in your first post, hence my questions. B String's answer is spot on. Changing the speaker in that combo is money wasted. Just save for a better rig, and heed his advice re: the eq on the combo for now.

It's supposed to do that. Combos should always have power enough to require a second speaker to handle the full output of the amp. Big sound requires a big rig, that's a simple law of acoustics that you can't get around.

Thanks guys. The main thing I was trying to accomplish is getting more clarity at a higher volume and I see now that the only way that is going to happen is to buy an head and a cab. I'm playing hard rock and metal. I know that ampeg and markbass are both good brands. The prices on acoustic rigs are more in my range, but am I going to run into the same problem that did with behringer. With clarity and brilliance.

Bill are you saying that I would be better off adding another speaker to my setup maybe to catch more mids.

Another cab couldn't hurt. But as a general rule of thumb, if you need to turn your amp up over half way in order to get the volume you need, then you need a more powerful rig. I currently own a Behringer combo that I use around the house. Rock and metal with a drummer and guitar both playing as loud as they can? Get a bigger rig. Sorry I can't be more encouraging.

Another thing to consider is how Behringer rates the wattage of their amps. IMO, 300 Behringer watts may be equal to about 100 (Ampeg, for example) watts in another amp. And also remember that adding extra speakers may not give you what you much added volume. If you do decide to change out the speaker, look for one that has a high SPL rating. Something at least over 90 @ 1/w 1/m. A speaker that gives you more actual volume per watt may (or may not) improve the overall volume of your amp. Again though, if you turn your bass all the way up, and pretty much max out your amp, more wattage may be your only solution. Try looking for an older Peavey Nitrobass or Firebass head and a 410 TVX. They go cheap used, and pack a lot of bang for the buck.
