Replacement speakers 2x15 cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. Just want to say I've been using these forums as a solid resource for my bass questions for years but this is my first actual registered user post.

Anywho, I have an old Earth 2x15 cab that is currently empty and I'm having trouble really narrowing down what speakers I want to put in there. Im playing a modded Fender P into a '70 (i think) Fender Super Bassman (100 watts). I dont run any effects b/c I like the overdriven sound of the amp.

My band plays heavy rock music and I guess Im looking for something that wont color my amps tone too much and just enhance the vintage vibe Im going for. I was looking at the Jensen MOD 15-120 and the 15-200 but I honestly am not real sure. What do you think?

not familiar w/that cabinet, alas. Your best bet is to measure carefully the interior dimensions of the cabinet, then using the free download WinISD plug in the Thiele-Small parameters of various 15" drivers. Would be worth knowing if you have a ported cabinet, measure the port id's and length. Little doubt, though, the replacement drivers will very likely need to have different port length (box tuning).

Eminence is a very good place to start for drivers as they have a lot of different ones and are very helpful in providing on their website the data you need. Many of the drivers also have suggested box sizes and tunings, too.

The output from Winisd will mean nothing to you unless you also model some cabs you do like, and compare. With not much power you'll want to aim for a bit more of a midbass hump that flat low extension that Winisd tends towards suggesting by default.

And as you do your WinISD exercise, don't lose sight of efficiency, which will be the watchword with an amp of that class.

this is true. I made the erroneous assumption that anyone looking at the plots from WinISD modelling will have an idea of what the plots mean in terms of the sound they're looking for, that's not the case if you've not really done this much. Thank you for pointing that out my omission

Fine for tone, but being guitar drivers they'll only take 15 and 50 watts respectively before farting out. Watts mean nothing, excursion and response mean everything. With a 100 watt amp two 15-200 are OK, but you won't be able to use a more powerful amp if the 100 watts isn't enough.
