Is replacing one speaker OK?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Traynor G2-150 (2x15) cabinet that I recently purchased that has one speaker that does not work at all. From doing research Im assuming that the voice coil is gone and that a recone on the speaker is not in the cards.
Its the original speaker in there which I think is a marsland but I dont know enough to be sure.
Im just wondering if replacing one speaker will lead to any problems?
Ive worked out the interior volume and i think an eminence will do the trick, but that will be another post. Thanks!

People do that all the time -- I did that with my 2X15 Yamaha cab 20 years ago and it's still going strong.

I would check with Traynor to determine who the OEM driver comes from, it would typically be best to replace with a near-identical speaker.

Except that it is typically best to replace with a completely identical speaker. With luck you should be able to get one from Traynor/Yorkville.

Ill definitely send traynor an email to see what they say. The cab is from 1975 so getting an exact replacement might be tough. Thanks for the replies.

Specs on the originals probably don't exist. I'd replace both, otherwise one will hold back the other. Besides, the best Marsland from 1975 is likely not the equal of even an Alpha 15 today.

Gotta agree here also. The specs of another replacement speaker will no doubt be different. The most important point is the impedance (four or eight ohms) and efficiency - - how much of a sound level the speaker produces when compared with the original OEM one. Best to stick with OEM if at all possible.

Marsland IMO never made a decent MI driver. They were better known for "commercial" speakers like for building PA/music systems.

I'd measure the cabinet and any ports. D/L winISD and identify what Eminence driver might suit what you have.

Im thinking the Eminence CB158 will work well. Just judging by what the cab volume is. I have 6.63 cubic feet altogether, but the speakers are seperated by plywood would i then divide by two?
Also where is a good place to get drivers in Canada?
Thanks for the help id be totally lost without TB.

I've had good luck with Q Components in Waterloo: Q-Components loudspeakers & audio products

You'd halve the volume per speaker less the volume of the shelf. Good luck with the project.
