Replacing Peavey 410 TVX tweeter

Sign in to disble this ad
The tweeter or horn in my Peavey 410TVX cab is making excessive noise. I've done no troubleshooting other than identifying that it's in fact the tweeter by dialing it off and on. It buzzes, has a high pitched background noise (not regular horn static, something additional, low volume, and extremely high pitched waveform sound).

I've heard a few people mention they simply bypass the tweeter and run the Sheffield's full range. However, they're only rated on paper to 4kHz, and the cab is normally crossed over at 3.5kHz. So I'm not sure how audible of a difference there would be between disabling the tweeter/horn or running the Sheffield's full range. It can't be very noticeable.

Lastly, I've always found the horns on these cabs a little overly shrill or something.

So, long story short.... is anyone aware of a direct replacement that would fit the cab, be appropriate for 3.5kHz on up, and be a little smoother sounding?

I have one of these that i put a new diaphram in only to find that the crossover was broken. If you don't find a suitable upgrade, PM me and I'll let you have it for shipping costs.

The element in the horn is replacable. I swapped out mine for about $15 a few years back. By your description, I'm not sure it's actually the horn itself either. They usually just blow or don't.

I recently sold an 810TX which I believe used the same tweeter. I should've swapped them for testing purposes to rule out the crossover before deciding it's definitely the driver itself. But that's my guess based on the sounds its making.

From memory, I believe the diaphram on the left is the correct one but you have to take out the the horn and check the number for sure. It's just four screws that hold the element in, can't remember if it's alan wrench or slotted.

My element has no numbers or identifiers on it at all. But I did have fun disassembling it and taking photos to share.

There was nothing visibly broken, the element appears to fit into the magnet tightly, everything bolts back together securely, nothing seems able to move freely so I'm not sure what's causing the noise that I'm hearing.

The opening for the tweeter is 3" with the four bolt holes at what appears to be 5 1/8" on center in a square pattern. So it's possible there's some other completely different tweeter/horn that could be installed. I always thought the current ones were a bit harsh compared to the smoothness of the Sheffields.

Enjoy the photos.
