Resitance is futile!

Yes I did read the thread on cabs and ohms but pretty much knew all that info already.

Here is the problem I have.

I'm looking for a new head. I like the looks of The Ibanez Promethean but its output is rated at 500 @ 4 ohms.

I have two (beautiful) Bag End D10BX-D cabinets rated at 4 ohms so that knocks me down to 2.
I was originally using an Aguilar db359 with the trans reworked at the factory to handle the 2 ohm load. It kept breaking so I sold it.

I'm adraid it would damage the promethean to run it at 2 ohms.
What are my options?
I want to keep the Bag Ends because I can't get anywhere near what they are worth if I sell them.
Plus their color matches the Promethean.

Who makes a nice amp that will run at 2 ohms?

wire them in series to give you 8 ohms.... or buy a new head.

Plan A: Buy a second Promethean and an a/b switch and run it:

bass > splitter > Promethean 1 > Bag End 1
Promethean 2 > Bag End 2

Voila, instant LOUD.

Plan B: Just run one cab. The other maybe you could trade rather than sell.

not any help, but this is exactly why 8 ohm cabs are preferable in most circumstances. In this case, I would suggest something like a Mesa M6 or M9 Carbine, which will handle the 2 ohm load, loudly.

if the drivers in each cab are 8 ohms in parallel for a total of 4 ohms, then you could try running them in series for a total if 16 ohms, and use both cabs at a total of 8 ohms.

It's easier just to make a series cable with 3 connectors and 3pieces of single conductor wire.

For splitting the signal, I jump rather than split. Just go from one place to the next.

The split cable sounds like the plan.

Could you point me to a diagram for that?
I have been an electro-mechanical assembler in the past but if there's something already out there I can work from that would be cool.

As long as it's safe for the amp.

Thanks,
C

Thanks Plstrns!

Got it. Still looking at alternative amps but I can go with the promethean and return it if the results aren't good.

I have an EA Micro 500 for sale in the classifieds. 500 watts, down to 2 ohms.

Or just get a simple power amp (QSC, Crown, Peavey, etc.). Run a line level signal (FX send, line-out, preamp out, etc.) from the Promethean into the power amp. The power amp in the Promethean drives one cabinet, your auxilary power amp drives the other cabinet. One set of EQ, flexibility, and plenty of power to drive both boxes.

Another alternative would be get two Prometheans (like cchorney suggested) except instead of a splitter, use the FX send of one to go to the FX return of the other. That way you have one set of pre-amp controls to deal with and you've got a built in backup too.

poweramp or look in the FAQ for a list of mono amp heads that will take a 2 ohm load.

Yeah, power amp. Any you pick can drive 4 ohms per channel. Use your current head or the Ibanez as a preamp. Feed each speaker the same signal routed through separate channels of the power amp. I did it with a Crest CA6. Killed bloody behinder. No need to bridge, or do anything complicated. Oceans of power that way, but heavy. A new lightweight power amp would be my choice.
