Respeakering an 8x10

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought a beat up 8x10 with only four 10's in it, so I have begun ordering new speakers for it. So, my first question is this, the speakers that are in it are 100 watt 32 ohm speakers, the speakers I am ordering now are 150 watts 32 ohm. So knowing this, I have to put the 150 watt speakers at the bottom of the chain of speakers correct? Otherwise I would have a high risk of blowing the 100 watt speaker if a 150 watt speaker came before it, passing off a stronger signal?

Second, in the long run I do plan on replacing all eight speakers, but will have these two different speakers be that big of a deal. I know some people say always have matching speakers, and some say its not too big of a deal.

Third, I was thinking about upgrading the speaker wire. I play through a Ampeg SVP into a 600 watt power amp, so Should I use 12 gauge wire? And anyone have any recommendations?

Lots of questions. Just looking for someone to say, yeah thats sounds right, or WAIT! DUMBASS! DON'T DO IT! haha.

Wouldnt make any difference which speakers came first but being you have 32 ohm speakers they would all be wired in parallel anyways. I wouldnt bother changing the internal speaker wires, there isnt alot of power going to each one anyways but mabe the speaker cord which handels all the power between you head and cab would benifit from 12 or 14 gauge wire. I'm guessing your going with the emenence legend b810 speakers if they are 32 ohm, thats what i would use and they should mix well with your other speakers.

Here's what I'd do , put the four speakers you already have in one grouping ( in the top 4 . or bottom 4 ), and your new speaker in a grouping of 4, I wouldn't worry about the wires in the cabinet, but I would suggest getting some speaker gasket material, to seal the back of the speaker frame to the cabinet, ( if the cabinet is a sealed design ) the 1/4" foam weather striping, with adhesive on one side, from the home centers works good for this, some speakers will have a gasket already applied to the back flange of the speakers, the last Eminence speakers I purchased did, but check anyways, one last thing, you might have to slightly retension the spade connectors to a couple of the speakers, just slightly apply pressure to the connector, don't crush it ..... good luck with your project

There is no 'chain'. The drivers are parallel wired, all receive the same signal level.

Got it, I know the speakers are wired in parallel, I just wasn't sure what terminology to use. But this all makes sense. Never thought about the speaker gasket though, will definitely do that. Its an old ampeg 8x10 so I'm stoked to finish it up and put my touches on it.
Thanks!
