Return it to GC? acoustic 301 cabinet

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a matching acoustic 301 cabinet for my 370. It doesn't work with my pedals, it hums and crackles when the pedals are activated. I even have an ISP decimator thats not clearing things up. Anytime I turn on the bright switch the hum is unbearable, and the bright switch brings the 301/370 setup to life in my opinion. I bought it for 411, 30 dollars shipping from guitarcenter... Should i return it and buy a legit recently reconed 301 that i know is a good example of this classic amp?

Or do I have this all wrong and the 370 is the problem...?

Perhaps borrow another head or cab with which to test?

I did try the 370 in an acoustic 200w cabinet at GC and it had zero buzzing on any setting. it was VERY clean sounding, probably should have mentioned that.

You bought a 301 (unpowered) cab and it hums? Is it the 361 powered cab not a 301 (in which case you run a line level signal to it from the 370)?

Sounds like a speaker issue and well....there's only one big speaker in there so....yeah.

I had two of those Vegas re-coned last year and they are not cheap kits - and you may have to check around a bit for the 4 ohm versions. Maybe you can work something out as a credit for the damage. Finding a 301 is one thing, paying freight to get it there is another. You will not find a way to ship a 301 again for 30 bucks again so keep that in mind.

I think your effects might be asking the 18" to do something it physically can't do...reproduce a lot of highs. Your bright switch is already pushing the envelope.

Speakers don't hum and crackle. They will reproduce hum and crackle present in the signal sent to them by the amp.

Just a thought, which input are you plugging the effects into & have you tried the other?

I'm concerned he has a powered 361 cab and is running a speaker output from the 370 to the power amp in the 361 (361 was the match for the preamp only 360).

No, I havent tried the other input. And I am positive it is a 301. Guitar center lets you return it to any GC from what I can tell. It was shipped because i bought it online. I can return it to the GC near me though (if i can fit it in my car)

I hope I am not expecting too much for this 18". It makes me wonder if i should even pair my 370 with a 301 instead of a more modern 410. I really like my pedals...

Is there an amp in the bottom of the cab?

301's very easy to tell from the 361. And I'd imagine you'd know what they look like by now. If it doesn't work with pedals but it works without them, I'd suspect something wrong in the pedals before the cab. Maybe you have a pedal that isn't playing nice.

The 301s usually work with fuzz okay but if you are using a chorus or other modulation not so much....at least not in a way that they work with a front baffle cab.

Pedals do not make cabs buzz. If there is buzzing coming from your pedals then it's coming from your pedals, if it's coming from your cab then it's coming from your cab. A pedal may sound better or worse with different amps or cabs, but there is no such thing as incompatibility in this regard. It's also possible that it's a sound your head is making all the time, and maybe a certain pedal in your chain is accentuation the sound.

I think it may be an amp problem, or, try and shine a flashlight through the grille and see if you see a bunch of wires and a massive heatsink. I agree with the above statements of it may be a 361. Also, there is no way way you will ever again ship a 301 for $30 again. That sounds like a once in a lifetime break.
