Reuse of a broken Ampeg 115W

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello.

I've got an old Ampeg 115w. Last week it fell down and the cabinet got a nasty crack.

Now I wonder; should I just get rid of it and buy a new combo, or should I reuse the speaker and amp.

Are the anyone here who has used the amp as a amp head? I mean taking the amp out of the combo and building a cabinet just for the amp?

Any thoughts?

Cracks can be repaired from the inside with a plywood patch glued and screwed over the crack. If it's really bad then perhaps a completely new enclosure could be made using the original as a template. If that seems like too much work, then selling it to someone who is willing to fix it might be the best option. If the crack leaks air, don't use the combo except at the lowest possible volume (for example, to show it works to someone interested in buying it) because the speaker could blow due to the crack retuning the resonance of the speaker enclosure.

Since I wrote this morning (local time) and started this thread, I've discovered that the speaker is damaged as well. And the crack is beyond repair, due to the 6 feet fall..

So; I've got myself an undamaged Ampeg 115 (100watt) amp module.

Are there any reason why I shouldn't build a box and make it into a amp head?

Are there really anything I could do wrong?

And; Are the amp worth spending time, and money, on turning it into a head amp??

Hello fellow countryman.

Go for it. It is a decent amp. It runs pretty cool and sounds ok. There are lots of prefab boxes out there..
