Rewire Peavey Tour 115 Help

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Peavey Tour 115 that was given to me but I believe the crossover unit in there is fried. When you plug it in you can here some nasty sizzle out of the tweeter but nothing from the 15. Can I bypass the crossover & tweeter completely and just install a new jack and wire directly to the 15? I've got an instrument jack laying around, are those the same type of jacks for a speaker input? Also, which wires need to go where on the jack? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you can definitely bypass the crossover, and it *shouldn't change the impedence any... I can't speak specifically for those cabs, but I've worked on alot of peavey gear - and their color code for speakers is usually:

yellow or red = positive

blue or black = negative

Thanks! Is there any difference in normal 1/4" speaker or instrument input jacks?

A bad crossover usually results in no output from the tweeter, seldom no output from the woofer. In all likelihood the woofer is blown, possibly because of an amp that's gone DC, which the crossover cap protects the tweeter from. Before proceeding you need to test the woofer to make sure it's not blown, and measure the amp output to be sure it's not passing more than a few millivolts DC.

Bill was right, the speaker is blown. Any recommendations for a 15 that will work well for this cab? I need lots of low end, volume and 4ohm.
