Rewiring 2x10 cab from parallel to series?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Avatar Neo 2x10 that I want to rewire from parallel to series.

In the cab, both speakers have their own + and - speakers cables going to them, then the "parallel" wiring occurs where the speaker jacks/inputs are.

Now I'm not sure how to incorporate the tweeter into this, but my guess is to unsolder all of the cables, so that I just have a + and - going into my speaker jack/input and wire the speakers from there.

I'm sorry this is confusing to explain in text, I may be able to post pictures later. Any help on doing this?

If you wire the tweeter to a separate connector you can biamp it. Does the cabinet have a passive crossover in it? If not, it's pretty simple. Just hook the + terminal of one speaker to the + of the jack, the - terminal of the speaker goes to the + terminal of the other speaker, the - terminal of that speaker goes to the - terminal of the jack. Done.

HTML Code:
Jack
+ -
| |________________
| |
| ___ |
+ - + -
 Speaker Speaker
The impedence will then be 4x what it originally was, though. ie, if it was 4 ohms (2x8 in parallel) it will now be 16 (2x8 in series).

Correct. I have done this with a previously 4 ohm, 175W Peavey 2x10, now 16ohms, so I could use it with an 8ohm, 400W, 1x15 making a total load of nominally 5.3 ohms. In the unlikely event I'd ever turn my old-school TE head to max I'd get about 80W to the 2x10 and about 170W to the 1x15 so everything is in the comfort zone. A lot of people will be frowning at this I know but the rig sounds good to me.

The caveat to this is that most likely the 2x10 may well be more capable of handling the 170W portion of your signal than the 1x15. Add to that the increased efficiency the 2x10 format provides over a single cone.

Indeed, Paul. I also have my eye on a Zoot 4x10 (pretty obscure British make) that's up for sale locally and keep one of the other cabs for the high-pass channel. I'm a skinflint though so waiting for it to come down a bit. Shall I say hello to the castle for you next time I'm passing?

Zoot I have heard of and trying to get the best bargoon is merely human and not being a miser. Unless you wait too long!

The Castle? I'm feeling a little thickerer today - what did I miss or forget?

I'm not quite gaga yet then! You should get over for The Big Cheese - you'll never find anywhere to park but at least you can say you tried. I'm from a bit further up the A470 - a little place named after a tree AND we were in Canada this year on holiday although that was way over in the west. Small world innit?

And it keeps on gettin' smaller! Except when yer sittin' in a plane for hour after uncomfortable hour!!!

I've forgotten all the roads by now but I used to drive all over south Wales installing telephone exchanges. Plus trips back home to Liverpool to visit the families.

We're completely off topic here but I got a smile all over my face!!!
