Rewiring a 8ohm 4x10 for 4 or 2 ohm?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'd prefer 4 ohm, because both of my amps can run at 4, but only one has a switch for 4 or 2. However, that's the head it'll be used with mainly.

It's a cheaper GK Backline cab. How can I rewire it from it's current 8 ohms to 4 ohms or 2ohms?

It can be rewired from 8 to 2 ohms, but the crossover won't work properly---it's designed for the eight-ohm cabinet.

It can't be rewired for four ohms.

Do you actually know the speaker box he is talking about? If not you are making some assumptions.

Assumption one is that it has 8 ohm speakers in it. There are almost as many 4x10 and 8x10 boxes out there with 32 ohm speakers. In either case it cannot be rewired for 4 ohms. If it has 8 ohm drivers it can be rewired for 2. If it has 32 ohm drivers it cannot.

Assumption two is that the woofers are in the circuit with the crossover. More likely than not the crossover is just a simple high pass filter on the tweeter and playing with the woofers will no effect on it.

You need to open the thing up and see how it is currently wired. If the woofers are series/parallel with no components in the signal path you can re-wire for 2 ohms. If not you have potential problems.

If there's a tweeter or otherwise something other than 4 speakers, I can remove them from the circuit. This is a cheap cab, I assume it doesn't have many features.

That link makes it look like you have 32 ohm drivers, in which case you will not be able to get anything less than 8 ohms.

Is this a 'squeeze out all the watts' thing or an output transformer tap thing? If it's the former you really don't need to worry about it. Actually, if it's the latter you probably don't need to worry about it either, but that's gonna be a whole discussion.
