Ribbed or Smooth Cone - advantages/disadvantages

Heading pretty much says it all. Of course, along with advantages and disadvantages, any other comments or observations between the two styles of cone?

The ladies like the ribbed cones better. (For her pleasure)

If this is the feature by which you're picking a speaker, then maybe you shouldn't be picking a speaker.

NOT - simply asking what I stated - advantages/disadvantages - or if you prefer it another way - reasons some are, some aren't.

Knowledge for knowledge's sake is not permitted on TB. Research is only acceptable if it has direct and immediate GAS-related applications.

+1. There are technical reasons for ribbed versus non-ribbed cones of course, but the only people that it really concerns are transducer engineers. Acoustical engineers don't give it a second thought, so neither should consumers.

I always thought that, as far as bass speakers went, ribbed ones tended to break up less than smooth ones. Myth ?

Myth. As is the case with everything from corrugated cardboard to Quonset huts the main advantage of ribs is increased rigidity with minimal weight. Lighter weight cones are mainly advantageous for higher frequency drivers, but you choose the cone based on whether it gives the desired result, whether it happens to be ribbed or not.

Sometimes tough to get an answer. If you look at Eminence's 3015, it has ribs in a larger part of the cone as opposed to the 3015LF which is designed for ultra low frequency reproduction. I'm assuming the ribs enable the frequency response differences between different drivers, but not exactly sure.

It definitely isn't something that should concern the end user though. Just pick the proper speaker for your application based on the meaningful specs.

On the old EVM 15L speakers, they had ribbs in the cone and the EVM15B had Smooth cones .... I would venture to say the ribbing had something to do with the high end of driver .... ?
