Well, he started out with rolled up $100 bills, but in the nineties moved on to glass pipes.
As far as his studio work, most of the bass was played by Oscar Allston of the Stone City Band. Oscar used a MM Stingray.

I had no idea he didn't play bass on his own album. Got a link to an article or something? I did a cursory google search and didn't find anything saying that.
