Rig of Doom question...will this work? Quest for perfect distortion.

I've been on a tone quest for a while, I'm looking to find the perfect way to blend a distortion tone with my clean tone while not losing the bottom end fundamental while the distortion is on or the sharpness and bite from my clean tone after I switch off the distortion.

I've found the key to this tone...its the Ampeg SVP-BSP. It has the ability to switch on the distortion while keeping the clean tone on, and you are able to adjust the volume and blend of the two channels. The problem with this is while playing both through one speaker the sharpness and bite are gone after the distortion is turned off.

However, it gives me the option to send the distortion to a separate amp. So my plan is to put the BSP in the effects loop of my clean amp. From that the clean output will go into the effects return of my clean amp, and the distortion output will go to a separate amp head and cabinet to be used only for distortion.

My question, first of all will this work? Will the signal going into the input of the distortion amp be ok to send into the input, or would it have to go into the effects return jack? Or would I have to plug directly into the BSP and have it split into the two amps from there?

Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.
