I live about 20 miles from Fort Scott, KS but sadly I've never heard of Road. I'd love to see the ad though.

After a bit of research, Road Electronics was started by Bud Ross (of Kustom Amplifiers) and eventually moved to LA and sold to a company there. Then Rickenbacker in turn bought that company.

The 220 and 440 by the few limited reviews I found on them were apparently pretty good sounding SS heads (like Kustoms?, perhaps) They also manufactured a 2x18 bass cab which was highly impractical as it required 3 men to move. The 1x18 cabs I found pics of looked rather large and cumbersome on their own as well.

Bud Ross apparently started several unsuccessful companies that had good products after Kustom. He apparently had a bad gambling habit as well.

...as far as I can tell anyway. Thanks for posting this, I learned something.

The cabinet is not Road, the head is. Cab is probably homemade (or close to it), probably junk, but could be ok maybe.

Head might be kind of cool. Guy I bought my Acoustic 106 from had a Road head but I really couldn't comment on the sound as I only tried it with his Lakland J with flats. So it was ok for a vintage sound, but who knows how it would be with a more modern style bass/tone.

I say offer the guy $225 for the head and see what happens. Leave the cab unless you end up really liking it. Guy is clearly either crazy or trying to pull something "offering" this setup for $1800 but "taking" $500. Probably best to take your own cab and bass to check out the head with.

ehh, i just bought an acoustic 370 head, I was interested only in the cab, which appearently isnt even the "road" brand. Thanks for the info guys, sounds like that head would be pretty awesome.

the road 440 was Ross's take on the 370. pretty similar amps after owning both.

I run a ROAD 4x12 cab for bass and this thing rules all.
It's my favorite cab with pretty much any amp.

A ton of my friends borrow it for recording bass and guitar as it sounds so good.

YMMV of course.
