Rock Practice Head Suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, I swear I'm not a noob here, but apparently my login info is long gone since I haven't used it since '04

Anyway, I'm in multiple bands, and unfortunately they can't share a practice space, so I have to keep separate rigs at each one; one I gig with regularly, and one that just stays at the other rehearsal space.

My "practice" rig for the last 10 years or so has been an Ampeg SVT350H into an SVT610HLF. Well, the 350H finally seems to have fried itself, and rather than get it fixed (since it was always kind of underwhelming sounding), I'm looking for a replacement head to power the 610.

I play P-basses fingerstyle with stainless rounds, and like an aggressive, tube-y rock tone (My gig rig is a '76 SVT into a Mesa PH412 for reference).

I'm only looking to spend about $500-$600, so I'm not expecting anything on-par with my SVT, but are there any hybrid or SS amps in this price range that are at least 500 watts and excel in old-school rock tone? I've used the search function, but there are a lot of choices, so I'm curious as to what works well for other folks....Thanks!
