Roll on cab protectant

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a bass cab where some of the tolex has rips in it and is peeling off. I was wondering if I peeled off all the tolex and recovered it by rolling on some of that roll on stuff they use for truck bed liners? Would that be a good idea and would it really protect it that much better? Would it cause any damage to the wood or the cab itself? Extreme caution will be taken if this is done to ensure the stuff does not get inside the cab or one the grill or speakers etc.

Remember the commercials where the guy whaled on the bed liner with a hammer and it did not scuff or chip...now I know everything works and looks better on TV, but any thoughts? Just curious.

It's tough stuff. Lot's of guys using it for DIY projects and redoing old cabs. A brand of it is Duratex. You can get it at autoparts stores. Use the big textured roller for a pebbly finish. Spraying it on makes a finer sandy finish. After you strip the cab fill in any imperfections/seams etc. and sand it good so they don't show through.

Pull all the components out of the cab so it's just a raw box. Put it back together when done.

Gasket handles/jackplate/everything when you put it back together so there's no air leaks.

My only gripe with the stuff is if you have a strap handle or any handle that doesn't have a cup behind it, it'll take the skin off your knuckles. Otherwise, it's tough and easy to touch up/keep looking good if you do happen to put a knick or dent in it. Takes a pretty good knock against something to do that though.
