Running 3 heads - Grounding and noise problems
Ill try to keep this short while including all the detail needed.
Running 3 heads through 4 cabs.
Peavey Musician - 2,4X10 cabs
Peavey Century - 1 2X10 cab
Peavey Bass - 1 1X18 cab
Using a Voodoo Labs Amp Selector switch.
At first we didnt understand why their was ground problems, as it said it would independently ground the amps using buffer amps in the pedal, and also has ground lift switches. after looking into it we realized it was because i was running multiple effects pedals AFTER the amp selector, so that effects could only effect certain amps. this wasnt exactly the pedals design, as it only grounds before, not after the pedal (logically).
So we got rid of the one spot and got an MXR Power Supply so that all the pedals will be grounded. it made a huge difference but all of a sudden, usually triggered by hi-gain distortion, their will be a slight, quiet pop in the musician amp, followed by a high pitched ringing, but kind of quiet. we noticed that if we went to the century head, and turned the gain knobs it would sound like someone trying to find a channel on an old transistor radio, if that makes sense. not static, but the bending up and down of the tone.
one the century was switched off and back on, it stops, but sometimes would click back and happen again. this happened before and after grounding all the pedals.
Is it the Century head itself? its very old and i had to clean it about 4 times to get it to even work without making noise and interference. i got it DOA on craigslist for 20 dollars so im considering just getting rid of it and getting a new head, but i also want to make sure its even the problem.
everything else has been checked and double-checked to no end. all our speaker cables, grounds, power supplies, patch cables, etc are in tested and working order, along with all pedals being used. the only pedal the musician and century share are two different distortions before the amp selector.
At this point im really considering going back to my AB/Y switch and just saying eff it about running 3 amps. but i would really miss the tone. i play in a 3-piece band thats only drum and bass, and have the heads all eq'd to represent different sounds, very low end, all midrange, and all mids and highs.
and help would be awesome and i can provide pictures and answer any questions to the best of my ability!
