Safe to use a head w/ more watts then speaker?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to connect a head like a Orange Tiny Terror (500watts at 8Ω) to my GK cab which is rated at 200 watts at 8Ω. Is this safe to do or will it blow my speakers?

I've done multiple searches and gotten mixed results.

Thanks for any input.

Does your amp have a volume control? If so no worries. When it sounds like poo turn it down.

I haven't gotten a head yet, which is why I asked the question. I will probably be getting one on the TB classifieds, and before I spend a bunch of money on a head I wanted to make sure that the head could have more power then my cabinet.

If by amp your referring to my cabinet the answer is no. There's just an input jack on it.

No, he meant the amp. A cab is not an amp. The true answer is what he said: "when it starts to sound bad, turn the amp's volume down, until it doesn't sound bad anymore". Following that practice will keep your speakers mostly safe from harm.

Caution is certainly needed.

IME the best way to stay out of trouble is to consider the size of the cab vs the requirements of the gig. Which is to say: only use that 200 watt cab in situations where you won't be tempted to crank the heck out of it to try and keep up.

OP, if you run a 500W amp with the volume cranked up to 10, you'll probably blow your speaker(s). If you set your volume level at a more reasonable level, you should be fine. If you turn up the volume slowly, at some level your cab will start to sound like crap, and it will continue to get worse until you turn it back down (or blow the speakers - then it will be perfectly silent).

I routinely use my amps that are rated at either 400 watts or or 800 watts at 8 ohms into cabinets that are rated much lower ( 200 or 400 watts) than that. The trick is not to push them at really high volume levels.
