Sansamp+LMII=GK tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I use a Sansamp BDDI with my Markbass LMII. I've been listening to a lot of bands that use GK amps and I am really liking their tones. One band that comes to mind is Off With Their Heads. Nate Ganglehoff's tone on their album From the Bottom is one of my favorites. Here's a link to their MySpace: OWTH. Listen to the song I Am You. My question is: can I get this tone with my set up?

Sansamp-Ran thru the effects return on amp-
Blend:100%
Treble, Bass: Noon
Drive: 1 o'clock
Presence: 2 o'clock

LMII-
Bass-Noon
Mids-2 o'clock
Treble-11 o'clock
No filters or gain

70's Jazz RI with just the Bridge pickup and tone knob dimed. Ampeg 810e.

Thank you!

There's really only one way to get the "GK tone" to be honest, and that's to buy a GK amp.

I run the same set-up a you with a sansamp and LMII
for starters i find that its better to run the sansamp straight
into the head other then into the effects return..

As for the GK tone i think that both the LMII and sansamp are very versatile pieces of equipment you may just need to take some time and play around with the settings the only thing that may lack is a little bit of crunch you can get out of a GK head... but up the drive on the sansamp and you may get that

LMII and MB2-500 fall into the same price range, you could easily do the swap.

That's the point of this thread, I can't afford to purchase a GK amp and I won't get much of a trade for my LMII. So I'm trying to work with what I got!

I'd say no, for a few reasons.

The SansAmp is an Ampeg emulator and designed to give that sound. In general that means a significant rolloff of the deepest lows, a clanky peak in the treble range and (unless you roll off both bass and treble on the Tech 21) a dip in the mids which is especially difficult because I think of GK rigs generally having very present mids.

To me, Markbass and GK are two flavors of very clean sounding SS tones. Adding Ampeg emulation to one won't give you the other.

But really, I think you could sell your LMII for upwards of $400 and pick up a used GK 1001RB-II in the classifieds for less than $500 shipped. It could end up only costing you $50 or so to make the switch.

For the record I really dig the LMII and 1001RB-II but if it's a GK tone you want, get a GK.

+1.

I own a lot of gear, but I always keep a GK. I can't get my TC or Genz Benz to sound like a GK or vice versa.

The 1001RB-II is a great head, loud as hell and can be found for under $500 used.

Thank you! I'm going to try to work something out. I'll probably go for the 700 instead of the 1001.

The MB2-500 is cheaper in Europe than Little Mark, I doubt that it would be the other way round in States since GK is local there.

Well, i can tell you, having owned both, with a sansamp pedal. When I got the LMII, i tried the sansamp pedal with the amp, and it just made it sound like garbage. The GK 1001RBII was much more grit friendly to my ear. The sansamp made my LM sound very harsh.

Anyways, to make it even more like you, I Traded my GK 1001RBII for my LMII. Not only that, but i just read 2 weeks ago that somebody in the classifieds wanted to trade their 1001RBII for a LMII or LMIII, so youre not exactly stuck here.
