I don't have a SWR head but I've run my RBI into the back of a few different kind of heads in the effects return. Usually this bypasses the heads tone controls and goes staight into the power amp section of the head. Check the signal path of your head to see if this is the case. That is if you want to bypass the SWR tone controls.

The 2 options are, 1- bass into RBI, RBI into amps input. This allows for the most tonal control. Option 2, bass into RBI, RBI into amps effects return. As noted above, this bypasses the SWR's preamp section. I'd go with option 1.

Its up to the player. If you like the sound of your amp you can have its eq mixed with the RBI for a heap of control over tone ' or
as people have said plug the RBI into the FX return to have only the RBI working.
I found i liked both ways. Its fun experimenting with the different sounds.
It can be a little much for the amp when running the RBI eq with the amps eq & can distort before you get the volume your after so dont be too heavily handed with the RBI gains & eq`s !

There is a way to get the sound of both the RBI and your amp's preamp independently. Assuming your efx return bypasses your bass amps preamp section here is a way to do it. You need to send the signal of your bass into the front of both your amp's preamp and the RBI. A splitter box, stereo chorus or even a Boss TU2 will work. It's usually best to use one that has a buffer (unless your bass is active) so you don't load down your signal. After you have split the signal and both preamps are being fed by your bass simultaneously you need to take the efx send of your bass amp's preamp and one of the outs of the RBI and send each to an ABY box. I have an old Morley pedal that does this and there are others as well. You need to send one output to the A channel and the other to the B channel of the box. You then take the single input (or output in this case) of the ABY box and send that to your bass amp's efx return. Now you can toggle between the RBI's preamp or your bass amp's preamp.

It sounds more involved than it really is but it really works and basically gives you a channel switching bass head.
