SansampPreamps...RPMor RBI ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Heard good things about the SANSAMP rack mount preamps....I've got a 2x10 SWR cab on top of a SWR "Big Ben" 18. Just bought a crown pwr amp and a crossover. Can't decide which is the better preamp for that situation...the RBI or the RPM..I'm pretty much a funk/R&B player.,,Anyone have any info on this ???

I use the RBI, but if I had to choose today I might go with the RPM for the extra mid control.

RPM for the sweepable mids. You lose the presence control but it's a fair trade-off IMO.

I use both. The Rbi gets real edgy and agressive, good for hard rock. I use the Rpm to give depth and roundness to the Rbi.

I'd go for the RPM as well.

I bought an RPM this weekend. A while back I had the BDDI and it sounded good. With my setup I need flexible mids. That made this choice for me.

MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION...

I didn't get to A/B the units & chose the RPM - almost solely because it is a newer product than the RBI & also Geddy switched from RBI's to RPM's when they were released... But I hear good things about both (used together)...

RPM, the sweepable mids will be INVALUABLE to getting the kind of tone you are looking for. The RBI isn't bad, but it's more suited to fingerstyle and a trebly, edgy sound. The RPM can be overdriven and edgy or it can be subtle and fat...I totally regret selling mine off, but I got a VT Bass Deluxe instead.

I just ordered a SansAmp RBI... chose the RBI over the RPM since I'll be using it as an effect rather than my sole pre-amp. The RPM has a sweepable parametric mid control, but I figure the parametric EQ on my Eden WT-400 can take care of that... meanwhile the RBI has a presence control to boost upper harmonics that the RPM lacks.

Will probably patch in the RBI through my Eden's fx loop, to add a little tube grittiness to the uber clean Eden tone, when necessary. I love the clear, warm Eden tone, but sometimes a little dirt is in order.

I love both the RBI and RPM, and fact is I use them in tandem, but if I had to pick just one it would be the RBI. Sure, the RPM sweep mid is really useful, but the Presence control on the RBI is absolute magic. Presence is especially valuable to me because I like gritty aggressive tones, and my gig cab is the Bergantino NV610, which has no tweeter.

+1 RPM because of the sweepable mids

I had an RBI as my main pre for about 5 years. Then I bought an RPM just to try it out.

For overdrivey tones I preferred the RBI. For cleanish tones I preferred the RPM.

In the end I sold them both.

Does the RPM have the same "magic" RBI/BDDI/tubey effect of making things sounds huge?

I've been rocking an RBI for a few years and love it, just curious

I also prefer the RBI's overdrive: to me it sounds gnarly and aggressive without being outright fuzzy (don't take my username too seriously ). Of course the RPM fuzz can be dialed in carefully with Drive and Blend, but the RBI OD is more usable IMHO.

In the end I put them both aside and am now using an all-tube preamp designed and built by TalkBasser JGR.
