SB-12 Update and advice needed/appreciated.

So I'm almost ready to have my 70's SB-12 brought in for work.

In the meantime, I have still been playing it and I love it...but.. I am getting minor pops that my experience tells me is tube related. I swapped the speaker for a Beta-12, which was a nice improvement. I'm still kind of wondering if I should have gone with an S2012 though. I loved the S2010 and I'm not sure if I'm reading it right but the specs make me think the S2012 would be a good fit in this amp. Keep in mind these late 70's SB-12 have a larger cab than the 60's version.

In preperation for it going in for service, I picked up pairs of NOS JAN Philips 6L6 and 5751 tubes. I think the 5751 will be a good match for this amp.

So I know from a previous thread that it's normal for the amp to break up around 11 O'clock....but is it normal that 12 12 O'clock it's not only really really overdriven... but it almost sounds like I'm playing through a Q-Tron pedal? Thats actually the best way I can describe it.

Also, is this a bad idea? I'm thinking of having the speaker cable out converted to a regular 1/4 in plug so I can plug this into another cab sometimes.

Your thoughts and opinions are always appreciated

if there was any better speaker for it, bruce michielli at fliptops.net would be all over it. i've found he's a darn good source of what new speakers work best in those amps, and i really wouldn't second guess him.

as for the speaker connection, just buy the adapters fliptops sells, and don't ruin your amp's possible collector's value.

those minor pops could be tube related. had it happen to me before. but it could also mean a capacitor is about to go. had that happen as well.

Thanks Jimmy, I hadn't really thought about it like that. I did get the Beta-12 from Fliptops actually.I have to go look at their site again, I never noticed the adaptors.

Ever change a gasket on a Fliptop? On mine it's not looking easy to get the old one out....it's going to be little bit of a project doing so and the Fliptops B-15 gasket, doesn't seem like its quite right for this cab.

ya, i bought a gasket from him too, and i could never get it in. i think if i trimmed it a little i could, but i just went and bought some closed cell foam strips from the hardware store and did it. not as classy as the rubber, but it does seal the cab.
