Schroeder Regular VS. Light Cabs

Sign in to disble this ad
From looking at the official Schroeder site, it looks like the Light version of their cabs are the same dimensions as the Regular cabs. The only difference is the weight and type of drivers - neodymium for the Light cabs and ceramic for the Regulars. Is there anything I am missing here?

Has anyone done A/B tests with same cab - Regular versus Light? Is there a big difference in tone? Volume? Besides the reduced amount of weight, are there any reasons to get a Light Schroeder cab over a Regular one?

In the next few weeks, I am going to to try several Schroeder cabs and see what my ears tell me. Probably the best way to do this, but I wanted to hear some real life examples so I know what to pay attention to.

Hello. I had a 1212 'regular' and a 1212L at the same time back in the day, so I can give you some limited info.

First, yes the boxes are the same between the two driver types regarding general design. The 'L' boxes and the neo loaded BMF boxes are made of lighter wood, which is part of the significant weight savings over and above the magnet weight.

The tone difference is very similar to many companies who offer a similar line of cabs both neo and ceramic versions (Epifani, Bergantino, etc.). The neo cabs tend to be a little less 'punchy' (i.e., less of an upper bass/lower mid bump) and a bit more aggressive/bright in the upper mids (more grindy and bright). This, IMO, is one of the reasons that (to greatly oversimplify) the 'rock guys' tend to still prefer ceramic drivers in general, whereas the funk/pop/jazz guys tend to feel that the brighter neo voicing is actually better (of course, the magnet type doesn't define the tone, but for some reason, that voicing carries through quite a few neo offerings, including Jorg's.

Since the baffle design Schroeders (with the side firing driver) sound more bumped in the lower mids and drop off in the upper mids versus a 'normal' cab, I find the neo voicing to actually sound better in an absolute sense with these particular cabs.

Can't really comment on the more traditional, larger cabs in the original line like the 410, etc.

Hope that helps a little.
