Sealed or Rear Ported 2x10's?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know Carvin makes a sealed 2x10, but do any other manufacturers make a sealed or rear ported 2x10 cab? I'm looking for something portable and really punchy and don't typically like the sound of the forward facing slots on the top or bottom. Are there any out there? Thanks.

Port location makes absolutely no difference, save when you shove a rear ported cab so tight to a wall that the port output is stifled and the cab tuning upset.

Remember, ports don't really make any sound. Port location, assuming done correctly, really doesn't matter much on the tone of a cab. Of course, sealed cabs behave differently.

That being said, the TC RS210 is one of my favorites... not that expensive, very small due to rear porting and coax tweeter... warm and punchy and articulate.

Kjung, I don't have an RH450. I looked at one, but ended up with a Carvin BX500.

I guess I am just looking for a sealed cab then. I had a SWR Golight 2x10 that had the slotted front port and now have a SWR Golight sealed 4x10 and they sounded completely different to me when A/B'ed together. I much prefer the sealed sound. I loved the ergonomics of the SWR 2x10 though, very light and easy to move. I guess I am looking for something like that SWR 2x10 cab but sealed.

No experience with the particular model but I believe that the Hartke 210XL is a single chamber sealed cabinet.

Yep, available at AMS for $199.00, so there's one for your audition list.

The Ampeg Micro SVT210 is sealed and is a very punchy sounding little cab, IMO.

I modified my post... I was remembering wrong about the head you have.

+1 that a sealed cab will sound different from a ported cab (tighter in the lows), but port location, front versus rear, won't make a tonal difference.

And, to complicate things further, some ported cabs are tuned quite high (like the Bergantino AE210... which happens to have rear ports), which gives them a bit of that mid present, punchy, tighter low end vibe like a sealed cab.

My Epifani NYCs appear to be sealed... and they are *huge*, tone-wise.

Ampeg's 210HE Is rear ported. They are discontinued I think, So you should be able to find one for cheap now.

Ampeg makes the sealed 210AV cab, the Pro Neo 210HLF (front ported), and
the new PF210HE (rear ported flip top cab)

Front corner ports in those. Look in the corners with a flashlight and you will see them.

I'm still looking around got a good tight sounding 2x10. I've got the Carvin and it sounds ok, but its a bear to move due to dimensions. It's deep and that makes it cumbersome to handle. I'd like something that was a little more portable but delivered a similar or better sound.

cab

Im betting that using two sealed carvin cabs but using the eminence b810 drivers would sound great. But, you'd need two cabs just to get an 8 ohm load.

I ended up going with a pair of SWR Golights. There is a local dealer that sells them so I grabbed a couple and use that with an RH750. Working really, really well. Thanks for all the input.

I believe the Markbass Traveler 210 is small, punchy and rear ported... although I also don't think it has the greatest low end extension of the 210 cabs I've played.
