Searching for gig able amp and cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I've been playing bass for a long time, and am just starting to play at medium venues and practice with a loud drummer. I'm looking to buy an amp and cab but don't really know where to start. My price range is about a 1-1.5 thousand USD and I am looking for probably at least a 4X10. Some direction on what I should look for in an amp and good amps/cabs to start with would be appreciated.

Edit:
It's an alternative/rock group. I've been using a fender rumble 100 watt, and it's just not big enough. I have to turn it all the way up and it loses tone in that range. I am also using a Fender P-bass special. I'm not super concerned with getting something very portable. Thanks

Maybe you don't need a bigger amp, but a quieter drummer.

Be sure you get something that you can easily manage to move around. 2 2x10" or 2 1x12" cabs may be more practical.

Yea, starting out we assume that to be legit we need a BIG rig. It is kind of like driving a big truck because you have a small $%*. Look at it this way, playing is fun as hell and moving crap is hell. SO, go light. The new micro heads are SWEET. I use the Genz Benz 9.0 but there are others. I use a single SMALL BagEnd 15" cab. It all fits in the trunk of my '94 subaru with my bass! You won't do that with the 4x10...but maybe your young and don't care about weight and size because you have roadies. I didn't either...but now I do (care that is...still no roadies!).

I'm more than happy with my GK 700rb and 410 neo, Those two should fit your budget, go 8 ohm and you can add another of the same cab later.

Not knowing what style of music or anything that you play or what your tonal goals are I am going to throw out an awesome yet flexible rig that you should try before you buy. If you could give us some sort of an indication of what it is that you are looking for we could give more definite answers, however with what I have I suggest a MIA SLM era Ampeg SVT 3 PRO and 4x10 HLF. All the best! Cheers.
