Searching for my sound! General chat about it.

I just finished responding to someone presumably less experienced than me, on getting his sound.

Is it appropriate for me to post here in a conversational mode?
I hope so!
I am searching for an amp speaker - my bass is pretty killer- 63 Jazz, strings for now are DR's. Action on the high side, but lower than I used to play, back in the day with the old heavy Gauge flats-La Bella's.
I just had a break through. I thought for sure I wanted an svt 8 10 cab. BUT, I had been playing the 8 10 with 4 of the 10's turned off! When the remaining 4 were turned on, I disliked the sound- because the PUNCH disappeared! I am obviously not a rock guy! The elevated top 4 10's in the svt cab sound much tighter than all 8.
I then shockingly switched to a mark bass combo amp w 2 10's, and though it sound a little antiseptic compared to Ampeg head.. I DID get PUNCH that I was craving.
Of course that's in a treated small room at GC.

Part of my tonal goals are
great PUNCH ( eden, fender showman - shallow cabs ) almost like a conga drum or certain bass drum tunings.
and the opposite. a deep bass sound but WITHOUT the slightest boom, just a cushion of deep lows.

these two are like a polarity I suppose
I am in exploratory mode right now.
I know I can add deep bass to a punchy cab ( and I am beginning to think THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE for the CABs role itself, as an integral part of what I call punch )
but I am not sure that is what I seek
for instance 2 identical punchy 2 10 cabs with low bass added by amp.

I am thinking deep bass- do I get it from amp or frm cab itself??

i seek opposite aspects punch and deep lows.
I want to learn more about these two different worlds of bass

I am thinking two cabs one ultra punchy the other for deeper bass ( not Low B deep, just low E 4 string ).
Ok, I rambled enough, any takers?

you would get the lows from the speakers. you can boost it on the amp, but chances are it wont sound how you want it. most bass guitar speakers dont have much output from 30-50 hz anyhow. thats where the deep bass lies that doesnt boom, you just feel it. i used 18 inch ev 180b speakers to get it. you could probably get it from 15" prosound drivers too.

Thank you.. I have read here, to NOT use 2 different cabs, but instead to use two of the same cab. Eg If I want punch, I would hypothetically get two punchy 2 x 10 cabs.
I do not play as loudly as some do here, I suppose I could somehow send lower bass to the one 2 x10 and the mids and highs to the other.
What you were saying was you differ with this opinion ( I am good with that!)
You are suggesting 0ne punchy cab and one deep cab, is that correct?
1a ultra punchy cab, which one ?- 1b how much does the speaker in that cab matter? ( assuming decent quality )
2a Which cab for low end? 2b Is there an existing cab/speaker that already does it?

Right now i have a 4 10 ampeg HLF which is ported and the ports themselves create a low end thing. I was totally surprised the DEGREE of difference between that cab and the more punchy 8 10 svt. Svt has much less low end.
I think I want a shallow cab ( not deep in its dimension ) to emphasize the punch. Surprisingly the mark bass 2 10 combo amp had punch and lows too. But that was in a store not on a gig. WHat are peoples experience with that Mark bass combo amp?
Would I be better served with 2 entirely different cabs for these two aspects of bass- punch and deep bass?

What I have not stated is that on different songs I want to significantly change my sound from very punchy to gradual degrees of bassiness. HOW one creates those tonal changes is usually the fingers and the amp settings, but I think the cab design plays a role.

Thanks again

I run my 63/64 jazz ( DR Sunbeams)thru a Genz-Benz 6.0 amp and two BG 2X10 . I think you should take a look at that set-up,many a sound man have told me it's the best sounding rig they have ever heard. If you can deal with the price tag I think you'll really be happy with what you hear.

pardon my knowledge lack, but what company makes BG?

i have spent about 8 hours in store playing genz benz
other than the streamliner ( the one exception that HAS low end ) , the benz stuff is impressive except a certain freq range in the low end is absent
this absence is maybe what makes it clean and articulate

i don't mean to be dumb, but I am always dealing with reconcilling opposites- just the right amount of bass
